Touché is a Brattleboro Literary Fest affiliated event. \n\n\n\nThis new literary magazine challenges popular (mis)perceptions of rural communities by supporting the visibility and creative aspirations of rural LGBTQ+ and POC writers and artists.  A recent report from the National Black Justice Coalition\, the Movement Advancement Project\, the Equality Federation\, and the National Center for Lesbian Rights confirms the national need for that visibility and inclusion\, stating that\, “..an estimated 2.9-3.8 million LGBTQ/SGL people live in rural America\, accounting for roughly 15-20 percent of the national LGBTQ/SGL population.”  Many of these individuals are queer folks of color while one fifth of all rural Americans\, that is approximately 10.3 million individuals\, are people of color. In a landscape that is often filled with assumptions about what rural life is life and who dwells within the landscape\, Mount Island is setting out to break down the walls of perception locally and nationally. \n\n\n\nThe evening will include judges Francis Cannon\, GennaRose Nethercott\, and Donald Mutebi who will be joined by four contestants who will engage in a playful battle of words until the last round. Desmond Peeples\, creator and editor of Mount Island adds\, “I wanted to celebrate our contributors and invite the community into our work through play\, in a way that could welcome folks who might not otherwise go to a ‘literary’ event. In 2006\, Anna started the Soubrette Jazz Choir at the Vermont Jazz Center which performs her creative arrangements of historical and contemporary American music. \nIn 2015\, Anna completed her Masters of Music in New England Conservatory’s Contemporary Improvisation program. In 2016\, the Music Center approached Simons with a challenge: Design education and performance spaces for teaching children classical chamber music using an abandoned elementary school\, and complete the project with a shoestring budget. \nAnother local award-winner is Gossens Bachman Architects’ Red Clover Commons Housing\, a 55-unit apartment building at 30 Fairground Road\, which tied for second place in the Peers’ Choice Awards. There will be a public reception beginning at 5:30 followed by a talk with the artist at 7:30. The show will also preview on Friday November 2 from 5:30 pm to 8:00 pm during the Vermont Jazz Center Emerging Artist Festival. The show will remain up through November 29th\, 2018. Gallery hours are Saturdays from 2 to 6 pm or by appointment. \nDetailed line drawings on old and recently salvaged paper mark a departure from the political and socially conscious images Namenwirth rendered through a technical process of digital pixelation. This current work delves into a highly personal art\, where each element is touched\, edges felt rather than masked and taped. \nThe inspiration for the work comes from closely watching trees as they grow\, observing the landscape\, their exterior bark and inner bark\, finally inside to the growth rings. These observations are translated through a process of abstraction\, drawing freehand in ink. “As the tree grows so do my drawings\, everything that happens in the process becomes part of the finished work – the moment is accepted as artifact\,” said Namenwirth.   \nNamenwirth has exhibited at The Bronx Museum\, Momenta\, VertexList and Galapagos in New York and his “Video and Animations” have been screened at Diva in Miami. He also ran an art moving company that made the moving the art. The truck painted as a conceptual message board while using it as a gallery and performance space during art happenings in Soho and Chelsea. \nThis is Namenwirth’s first solo exhibition since 2008 at VertexList when he decided to step back from the socially oriented work he had been producing and began to study music and started a project growing trees from seed.
