I Want A Better Catastrophe: Navigating The Climate Crisis with Grief, Hope, and Gallows Humor
March 9, 2023 at 6:30 pm
CELEBRATED AUTHOR, PRANKSTER, COMEDIAN ANDREW BOYD TO PERFORM FROM HIS NEW BOOK: I WANT A BETTER CATASTROPHE
The first in a series of live talks curated by 118 Elliot and Everyone’s Books with varied takes on climate emergency begins Thursday, March 9, 2023 at 118 Elliot with I WANT A BETTER CATASTROPHE: NAVIGATING THE CLIMATE CRISIS with Grief, Hope, and Gallows Humor (New Society Publishers, February 2023) by renowned climate activist and prankster Andrew Boyd at 118 Elliot, 118 Elliot Street, Brattleboro, VT 05301. Doors open at 6:00 pm, Boyd will begin at 6:30. Books will be available for purchase/signing.
The founder of creative protest measures including the Climate Clock and Climate Ribbon, Boyd says humanity is on a “path of profound grief” and to cope with this “impossible new reality” people will need the wisdom, rituals, and stories that literature and spiritual teachers offer. So his book does just that, featuring eight leading climate thinkers — from collapse-psychologist Jamey Hecht to grassroots strategist adrienne maree brown, eco-philosopher Joanna Macy, and Indigenous botanist Robin Wall Kimmerer — asking them: “Is it really the end of the world? And if so, now what?”
First reviews of the book are terrific: “Exactly the kind of paradoxical truth-telling we need now more than ever!” writes Frances Moore Lappe, author, Diet for a Small Planet. “Stunning. Marks the emergence of a new and genuinely exciting kind of realism,” says Brian Eno, musician & environmentalist. Bill McKibben says Boyd’s book: “Proves it’s never too late for a good laugh, a good cry, and a good call to action!”
This event is free but donations are appreciated and pre-registration for this live event at Eventbrite is advised.
The series, all at 118 Elliot, will continue Thursday April 20 with Jon Erickson’s The Progress Illusion: Reclaiming Our Future from the Fairytale of Economics (Island Press, December 2022) and Thursday May 11 with Chuck Collin’s debut novel Altar to an Erupting Sun (Green Writers Press, publication in May 2023), a near-future story of people in the Brattleboro area facing climate disruption in the critical decade ahead getting terrific advance reviews.
