DESCRIPTION:Internationally renowned author and expert on income inequality Chuck Collins’ debut novel is turning heads. A near-future story of passionate characters set in the Brattleboro area facing climate disruption in the critical decade ahead. \n“Collins’ warm\, affecting tale raises an important question…: Is there any measure or action that is too radical\, too extreme if truly necessary to save the planet and its people?” Gus Speth\, author and former Dean\, Yale School of Environment

SUMMARY:‘Bernie’s Mittens’ Book Event with Jen Ellis
DESCRIPTION:LIVE BOOK SERIES FEATURES JEN ELLIS’ DEBUT MEMOIR ‘BERNIE’S MITTEN MAKER’ \n118 Elliot\, Everyone’s Books\, and Green Writers Press welcomes celebrated author Jen Ellis who will read from and discuss her hot-off-the-press debut memoir Bernie’s Mitten Maker (Green Writers Press) on Friday May 12\, 2023 at 6:30 pm. Books will be available for purchase/signing. Event is free but donations are appreciated. \nBernie’s Mitten Maker is a raw and honest account of the joy\, stress\, and shock of sudden internet fame. Told with captivating storytelling\, this memoir explores the many roads that led to the Bernie Sanders mitten meme sensation that followed the 2021 presidential inauguration. Jen Ellis’s debut publication reads like an intimate conversation with an old friend. Vermont teacher\, mother\, and crafter\, Ellis weaves the stories of her life together with humor and thoughtful insight. She shares her struggles with childhood trauma\, infertility\, and homophobia and shows us how crafting can build community and generosity can bring joy. \nAlison Bechdel\, comic artist of Dykes to Watch Out For and Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic\, has this to say about the book: “In the fine old Vermont tradition\, Jen Ellis keeps it real—as well as warm and fuzzy. Not even going viral stays this crafter from her self-appointed rounds of neighborliness\, generosity\, and radical kindness. Bernie’s Mitten Maker is an engrossing memoir about the healing power of handwork and the generative potential of an openhanded approach to life. And when you think about it\, what’s an upcycled\, fleece-lined mitten but a wide open hand?” \nUVM Alum Jennifer Ellis with Bernie mittens \nJEN ELLIS was a teacher and crafter when the mittens she sewed for Senator Bernie Sanders became the inspiration for millions of memes. Originally from South Portland\, Maine\, Ellis’s teaching career spanned nearly two decades in the public schools of North Carolina and Vermont. She is a songwriter\, beekeeper\, and crafter of the occasional pair of mittens for local non-profit fundraisers. She is currently pursuing a Master’s in Counseling from the University of Vermont. This is her debut publication. Ellis lives in Vermont with her wife and daughter.

SUMMARY:Windham World Affairs Council Presents: Surfing as Development
DESCRIPTION:As the dust settled after a decade of war and Nicaragua faced the daunting challenge of rebuilding\, surfers sought out the world’s best waves. By chance they stumbled upon the remote beaches of Nicaragua’s Emerald Coast\, discovering a previously unknown surfing paradise. The daredevils of travel\, surfers withstand anything for the thrill of a good wave. Learn how their tenacity and networking created new value and industry for Nicaragua’s sleepy coasts – paving the way for tourism development and eco-communities. \nIn 2021\, at the height of the pandemic\, Tamara Stenn purchased a small surf house in Nicaragua\, enabling her to be an eyewitness to Nicaraguan fishermen\, restaurateurs\, caretakers\, and surfers\, and the expats amongst them change the face of Nicaragua’s remote costs. She will share their stories. After the presentation\, join us in an interactive panel discussion with Dr. Jason Old and Dr. Lindsay Usher\, surfers and academics\, who have been surfing and studying Nicaragua development as well. \nThe presentation is in person and will also be broadcast via zoom. The panelists will join via zoom and will take audience questions and participate in discussion. SUMMARY:Finding Vocal Harmonies\, with Anna Patton
DESCRIPTION:An Ear Training workshop mini-series\nWednesday afternoons\, 1:30-3:00pm\nMay 24th\, May 31\, and June 7\n$55 to pre-register for all 3 dates or $20 per class for walk-ins. \nFor singers and curious listeners; a workshop to sharpen the musical ears and help us invent and sing vocal harmonies. We’ll take songs that are easy to pick up and/or well-known (folk songs\, popular songs\, pub-style singalongs\, etc.) and sing our way into the mysteries of what makes their harmonies tick. There will be some “music theory” in this class\, but we will keep it to a homeopathic dose\, concentrating on ears\, voices\, and intuition. Participants do not need to read music or have any musical training. \nAnna Patton is a versatile clarinetist\, singer\, composer\, arranger\, and educator driven by musical curiosity. She is the co-founder of Zara Bode’s Little Big Band\, in which she plays clarinet and writes the band’s arrangements. She also works with the internationally touring dance band Elixir\, which plays American and Celtic fiddle tunes with a horn section\, influenced by early jazz\, R&B\, and classical music. She has recorded albums as a solo artist and with Elixir\, and appears on albums by many other artists including Julian Gerstin\, Julie Vallimont\, and Andrew VanNorstrand. She directs the Soubrette Jazz Choir based at the Vermont Jazz Center\, which performs her creative arrangements of historical and contemporary American music. \nAnna has a Masters of Music from New England Conservatory’s Contemporary Improvisation program\, with a focus on Aural Skills\, Composition\, and Early Jazz. She is endlessly fascinated by how the ear makes sense of music and is excited to explore harmonies with participants at 118 Elliot St. \nYou may register in advance or register by showing up a few minutes early to the first class you attend. To register\, inquire about scholarship assistance\, or ask other questions about the class\, email Anna Patton at annameryl@gmail.com
