SUMMARY:Introduction to Extinction Rebellion
DESCRIPTION:A presentation and community discussion for anyone curious about Extinction Rebellion\, the international movement that uses non-violent civil disobedience to achieve radical change in order to minimize the risk of human extinction and ecological collapse. \nIn Vermont\, huge Extinction Rebellion groups are forming in regions like the Upper Valley and the capital\, but our local chapter\, Extinction Rebellion Southern Vermont\, is still rallying for that same energy and growth from our community. \nJoin us for a friendly and informative introduction to Extinction Rebellion\, and learn how you can become involved in the movement. With your help\, we’ll work toward goals including a series of local climate justice events linked with massive worldwide actions\, and lobbying the State of Vermont to declare a Climate Emergency as part of a national movement to shift environmental policy before it’s too late. The time is now!

We will let our spirits fly! Tara is the founder and director of Cape Cod African Drum and Dance who has been teaching African dance for 15 years. \n\n\n\nUlt Mundane has been studying traditional West African drumming for over fifteen years. He has learned from world-renowned teachers such as Famoudou Konate and Mamady Keita\, and since 2010 he has studied with Namory Keita\, a master drummer from Guinea who now lives in Maine. He’s been teaching weekly djembe and dundun classes for twelve years. He currently teaches Monday evenings at the Rise Up Center in Wilton\, NH. Learn to play the high-energy dance music of West Africa! We’ll touch on the foundations of technique for playing the djembe\, and then learn a series of phrases that go with a traditional song. \n\n\n\nTara Murphy\, originally from Washington\, D.C.\, grew up studying ballet and theater. She earned her B.A. in theater and religious studies at Yale University. At this time she also began studying African dance and drumming\, and exploring her African heritage. For the past 20 years\, she has studied closely under many African and Afro-Caribbean artists in Washington\, D.C.\, New York City and Boston. Tara recognizes the practice of African dance and drumming as a tremendous force for healing\, meditation\, empowerment and community. It is her greatest honor to share the inspiration of these ancient traditions. \n\n\n\nTo stay informed about classes check out http://www.africandancevt.com/ and African Dance Vermont on Facebook.

SUMMARY:"Within the Eye of the Storm" with Jerusalem Peacebuilders
DESCRIPTION:WWAC\, together with 118 Elliot\, will host Jerusalem Peacebuilders who will offer a screening of\n“Within the Eye of the Storm”\nFollowed by group discussions with the participants in the Jerusalem Peacebuilders’ Vermont Leadership Institute \nPlease join us for a special program focusing on the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict.  Jerusalem Peacebuilders will present the powerful Israeli film\, “Within the Eye of the Storm\,” followed by small group discussions led by pairs of Israelis and Palestinians from the Jerusalem Peacebuilders’ Vermont Leadership Institute.  This is a rare opportunity to meet Israeli and Palestinian peacebuilders and to learn more about one of the most challenging conflicts of our time.  Doors will open at 5:30 pm\, with the film beginning at 6pm and discussion following afterward.  Refreshments will be served. \n“Within the Eye of the Storm” is the story of Bassam and Rami\, a Palestinian and an Israeli who were once dedicated fighters willing to kill and be killed by one another for their nations. When faced with the tragic loss of their daughters in the conflict\, they chose to do the unexpected\, and\, instead of seeking revenge\, they turned from enemies into brothers. \nJerusalem Peacebuilders’ Vermont Leadership Institute brings together American\, Israeli\, and Palestinian young adults with the focus of creating a new generation of peacebuilders and leaders. The program challenges participants to consider different perspectives around the Israeil-Palestinian conflict. In addition\, it encourages participants to deepen their understanding of faith traditions and develop strategies for taking action to promote peace.

SUMMARY:Solutions: Where Do We Go From Here? A Community Conversation
DESCRIPTION:The Commons is hosting this community conversation moderated by the investigative reporting team MacLean (Mac) and Shanta Lee Gander. \nThis conversation is an opportunity to invite everyone throughout the community to discuss some of the ways they are addressing some of the various topics that The Commons has covered in previous Special Focus sections especially the most recent piece\, Flying Signs. \nThis is not about individuals from a seat of power or position helping individuals who aren’t in those positions of power. Instead\, this is focused on asking the question what role do we all play as individuals who live and work in Brattleboro? How can we all see ourselves as a part of the solution and what does that look like for our community? Please join us as we explore what’s possible.
