In the show\, some artists explore how creativity helps heal the legacy of personal and cultural trauma. Other artists’ work arises from discovering their voice in relation to the past. Each artist interprets and shares the theme\, often including text\, through their own lens\, inviting viewers into the creative process to create a deeper experience for all. The exhibition includes work by: Toto Feldman\, Liza King\, Shanta Lee\, John Loggia\, Phyllis Odessey\, Tina Olsen\, Jack Pombriant\, Lissa Weinmann\, Kathryn Wocell and Hope Zanes. \nParticipating artists will attend the Friday\, June 2 Gallery Walk opening from 5:00 to 9:00 pm. Refreshments will be served. The show will run through the month. Gallery Hours are Fridays and Saturdays from 4:00 to 7:00 pm or by appointment by contacting 118elliot@gmail.com. \nSeveral artists in the exhibit will create unique installations to amplify how their work is related to personal history. For example\, 85-year-old Hope Zanes relates how her innovative large gum bichromate photographs relate to her long-time neighbor and world renowned photographer\, Lotte Jacobi\, who encouraged her in this process. \nTwo public events in June will continue to explore the ‘Creative Relations’ theme:On Thursday\, June 15\, 2023 from 5:30 to 7:00 pm at 118 Elliot\, select exhibition artists will share personal perspectives on how relationships influence their work in a roundtable discussion led by an insightful\, experienced moderator. SUMMARY:Finding Vocal Harmonies\, with Anna Patton
DESCRIPTION:An Ear Training workshop mini-series\nWednesday afternoons\, 1:30-3:00pm\nMay 24th\, May 31\, and June 7\n$55 to pre-register for all 3 dates or $20 per class for walk-ins. \nFor singers and curious listeners; a workshop to sharpen the musical ears and help us invent and sing vocal harmonies. We’ll take songs that are easy to pick up and/or well-known (folk songs\, popular songs\, pub-style singalongs\, etc.) and sing our way into the mysteries of what makes their harmonies tick. There will be some “music theory” in this class\, but we will keep it to a homeopathic dose\, concentrating on ears\, voices\, and intuition. Participants do not need to read music or have any musical training. \nAnna Patton is a versatile clarinetist\, singer\, composer\, arranger\, and educator driven by musical curiosity. She is the co-founder of Zara Bode’s Little Big Band\, in which she plays clarinet and writes the band’s arrangements. She also works with the internationally touring dance band Elixir\, which plays American and Celtic fiddle tunes with a horn section\, influenced by early jazz\, R&B\, and classical music. She has recorded albums as a solo artist and with Elixir\, and appears on albums by many other artists including Julian Gerstin\, Julie Vallimont\, and Andrew VanNorstrand. She directs the Soubrette Jazz Choir based at the Vermont Jazz Center\, which performs her creative arrangements of historical and contemporary American music. \nAnna has a Masters of Music from New England Conservatory’s Contemporary Improvisation program\, with a focus on Aural Skills\, Composition\, and Early Jazz. She is endlessly fascinated by how the ear makes sense of music and is excited to explore harmonies with participants at 118 Elliot St. \nYou may register in advance or register by showing up a few minutes early to the first class you attend. To register\, inquire about scholarship assistance\, or ask other questions about the class\, email Anna Patton at annameryl@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Windham World Affairs Council Presents: Surfing as Development
DESCRIPTION:As the dust settled after a decade of war and Nicaragua faced the daunting challenge of rebuilding\, surfers sought out the world’s best waves. By chance they stumbled upon the remote beaches of Nicaragua’s Emerald Coast\, discovering a previously unknown surfing paradise. The daredevils of travel\, surfers withstand anything for the thrill of a good wave. Learn how their tenacity and networking created new value and industry for Nicaragua’s sleepy coasts – paving the way for tourism development and eco-communities. \nIn 2021\, at the height of the pandemic\, Tamara Stenn purchased a small surf house in Nicaragua\, enabling her to be an eyewitness to Nicaraguan fishermen\, restaurateurs\, caretakers\, and surfers\, and the expats amongst them change the face of Nicaragua’s remote costs. She will share their stories. After the presentation\, join us in an interactive panel discussion with Dr. Jason Old and Dr. Lindsay Usher\, surfers and academics\, who have been surfing and studying Nicaragua development as well. \nThe presentation is in person and will also be broadcast via zoom. The panelists will join via zoom and will take audience questions and participate in discussion. SUMMARY:‘Bernie’s Mittens’ Book Event with Jen Ellis
DESCRIPTION:LIVE BOOK SERIES FEATURES JEN ELLIS’ DEBUT MEMOIR ‘BERNIE’S MITTEN MAKER’ \n118 Elliot\, Everyone’s Books\, and Green Writers Press welcomes celebrated author Jen Ellis who will read from and discuss her hot-off-the-press debut memoir Bernie’s Mitten Maker (Green Writers Press) on Friday May 12\, 2023 at 6:30 pm. Books will be available for purchase/signing. Event is free but donations are appreciated. \nBernie’s Mitten Maker is a raw and honest account of the joy\, stress\, and shock of sudden internet fame. Told with captivating storytelling\, this memoir explores the many roads that led to the Bernie Sanders mitten meme sensation that followed the 2021 presidential inauguration. Jen Ellis’s debut publication reads like an intimate conversation with an old friend. Vermont teacher\, mother\, and crafter\, Ellis weaves the stories of her life together with humor and thoughtful insight. She shares her struggles with childhood trauma\, infertility\, and homophobia and shows us how crafting can build community and generosity can bring joy. \nAlison Bechdel\, comic artist of Dykes to Watch Out For and Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic\, has this to say about the book: “In the fine old Vermont tradition\, Jen Ellis keeps it real—as well as warm and fuzzy. Not even going viral stays this crafter from her self-appointed rounds of neighborliness\, generosity\, and radical kindness. Bernie’s Mitten Maker is an engrossing memoir about the healing power of handwork and the generative potential of an openhanded approach to life. And when you think about it\, what’s an upcycled\, fleece-lined mitten but a wide open hand?” \nUVM Alum Jennifer Ellis with Bernie mittens \nJEN ELLIS was a teacher and crafter when the mittens she sewed for Senator Bernie Sanders became the inspiration for millions of memes. Originally from South Portland\, Maine\, Ellis’s teaching career spanned nearly two decades in the public schools of North Carolina and Vermont. She is a songwriter\, beekeeper\, and crafter of the occasional pair of mittens for local non-profit fundraisers. She is currently pursuing a Master’s in Counseling from the University of Vermont. This is her debut publication. Ellis lives in Vermont with her wife and daughter.

SUMMARY:The Progress Illusion: Reclaiming Our Future from the Fairytale of Economics
DESCRIPTION:Flawed economic thinking has led us to the abyss\, argues long-time UVM Professor/Economist and Emmy-award winning doc filmmaker Jon Erickson whose clear\, authoritative language and personal run-ins and revelations about the rigged ‘science’ of economics steer the reader to a new economics that puts well-being ahead of GDP. \n“Erickson explains…just what would need to change if we were to actually build a world that worked much better. SUMMARY:I Want A Better Catastrophe: Navigating The Climate Crisis with Grief\, Hope\, and Gallows Humor
DESCRIPTION:CELEBRATED AUTHOR\, PRANKSTER\, COMEDIAN ANDREW BOYD TO PERFORM FROM HIS NEW BOOK: I WANT A BETTER CATASTROPHE\nThe first in a series of live talks curated by 118 Elliot and Everyone’s Books with varied takes on climate emergency begins Thursday\, March 9\, 2023 at 118 Elliot with I WANT A BETTER CATASTROPHE: NAVIGATING THE CLIMATE CRISIS with Grief\, Hope\, and Gallows Humor (New Society Publishers\, February 2023) by renowned climate activist and prankster Andrew Boyd at 118 Elliot\, 118 Elliot Street\, Brattleboro\, VT 05301. Doors open at 6:00 pm\, Boyd will begin at 6:30. Books will be available for purchase/signing. \nThe founder of creative protest measures including the Climate Clock and Climate Ribbon\, Boyd says humanity is on a “path of profound grief” and to cope with this “impossible new reality” people will need the wisdom\, rituals\, and stories that literature and spiritual teachers offer. So his book does just that\, featuring eight leading climate thinkers — from collapse-psychologist Jamey Hecht to grassroots strategist adrienne maree brown\, eco-philosopher Joanna Macy\, and Indigenous botanist Robin Wall Kimmerer — asking them: “Is it really the end of the world? And if so\, now what?” \nFirst reviews of the book are terrific: “Exactly the kind of paradoxical truth-telling we need now more than ever!” writes Frances Moore Lappe\, author\, Diet for a Small Planet. “Stunning. Marks the emergence of a new and genuinely exciting kind of realism\,” says Brian Eno\, musician & environmentalist. Bill McKibben says Boyd’s book: “Proves it’s never too late for a good laugh\, a good cry\, and a good call to action!” \nThis event is free but donations are appreciated and pre-registration for this live event at Eventbrite is advised. \nThe series\, all at 118 Elliot\, will continue Thursday April 20 with Jon Erickson’s The Progress Illusion: Reclaiming Our Future from the Fairytale of Economics (Island Press\, December 2022) and Thursday May 11 with Chuck Collin’s debut novel Altar to an Erupting Sun (Green Writers Press\, publication in May 2023)\, a near-future story of people in the Brattleboro area facing climate disruption in the critical decade ahead getting terrific advance reviews. \nSEE BOOK SITE: bettercatastrophe.com \n  \n

SUMMARY:Architecture + Design Film Series continues with 'Frederick Law Olmstead and America's Urban Parks' on Wednesday October 17 at 6:30pm
DESCRIPTION:The film features the voices of Kevin Kline and Kerry Washington. \n151 years after Frederick Law Olmsted designed New York City’s Central Park with Calvert Vaux\, it remains an undisputed haven of tranquility amidst one of the largest\, tallest\, and most unnatural places on earth. \nOlmsted and America’s Urban Parks\, a one hour documentary\, examines the formation of America’s first great city parks in the late 19th century through the enigmatic eyes of Frederick Law Olmsted (1822 – 1903)\, visionary urban planner and landscape architect. \nWith incredible foresight that spanned centuries\, Olmsted brought nourishing green spaces to New York\, Boston\, Chicago\, San Francisco\, Atlanta\, Louisville\, and dozens of other US cities. Throughout his working life\, Olmsted and his firm carried out over 500 commissions\, nearly 100 of which were public parks. The parks\, he held\, were to be vital democratic spaces in cities\, where citizens from all walks of life could intermingle and be refreshed. \nPrior to officially committing to landscape architecture\, Olmsted was a New York Times correspondent to the Confederate states\, the manager of a California gold mine\, and General Secretary of the United States Sanitary Commission during the Civil War. The man\, a workaholic by today’s standards\, plagued with chronic ailments\, spent the latter half of his life devoting nearly every waking minute to creating restorative green spaces for overworked city dwellers. SUMMARY:PORTALS | Art Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:PORTALS\nMUTSU CRISPIN\nOctober 7-30\, 2022OPENING: Friday\, October 7\, 5-9pm\nhours: Thurs-Sat\, 11-5pm\, Sun 2-5pm (or by chance/appt.)\n118 Eliiot St.\, Brattleboro\, VT 05301\n118 ELLIOT PRESENTS “PORTALS”\, AN EXHIBIT OF SCULPTURE\, DRAWINGS AND PHOTOS EXPLORING SPIRITUAL PASSAGE. \n‘I like to boil a piece down until it’s essential\, until it almost disappears\, until the stark poetry of it rings clear.’ ~Mutsu Crispin \nFrom October 7-30\, 118 Elliot Street Gallery in downtown Brattleboro\, VT will present a large exhibit of sculptures\, drawings and photos entitled Portals by artist Mutsu Crispin (aka Johnny DiGeorge). The artist brings a playful energy to work exploring transformation and spiritual passage\, including pieces related to the independent film Redbelly and to the upcoming children’s book\, The Falling Stars of Emerworld. \nAfter living in beloved Vermont for 2 decades\, the artist is soon moving his base of operations to Haiku\, Hawaii and the show represents both a retrospective of this period in New England\, and a conjuration around the upcoming life shift. \nMany of the sculptures are crafted from thin layers of vibrantly tinted plexiglass\, laser cut and assembled into various designs\, many fantastical or hypnotic. The eponymous Portals series utilizes a small number of simple elements to map the passage through various life transformations: Love\, Initiation\, Shadow Extraction… The pieces are puzzled together\, with the same underlying designs explored through myriad palettes of color\, mirrored reflection & transparency. Visual stories are told in multiple ways\, drawing out nuances of the narrative and different poetic associations. In the series Uprising\, ten variations of the same large sculpture chart personal and communal upheaval and ascension. LEDs and mirrors are utilized in several pieces to expressively utilize the illusion of infinite depth. \nAlso on display are pieces from his bouncy ball series\, where 100’s of balls are coaxed into place between sheets of plexiglass\, creating roiling pools of emerging and disintegrating shapes\, suggesting essential forms discovered through a telescope\, microscope\, or x-ray. \n“Much of my work is concerned with how to evoke or visualize subtle phenomena — physical\, conceptual\, emotional\, spiritual — while taking a joyful interest in the qualities of diverse materials and precise engineering.” \nMutsu Crispin / John DiGeorge grew up in a rural suburb of Atlanta\, GA and studied Visual and Environmental Studies at Harvard University. After a stint working in the film industry in New York City he moved to southern Vermont\, splitting his time between artistic ventures and design work for many local businesses and individuals\, including the Brattleboro Museum\, VT Jazz Center\, Brattleboro Hospice\, Boys & Girls Club\, Oak Meadow\, GS Precision\, Clear Solutions\, Altiplano\, Mitchell Giddings Fine Arts\, Superfresh\, Experiential Tools\, Laura Zindel\, David Brewster\, Jared Flynn\, Johnny Swing\, and many others! \nSpecial thanks to John & Lissa at 118 Elliot and to Roger\, Tom and the staff at Clear Solutions in Hinsdale\, New Hampshire where most of the pieces in the show were fabricated.

SUMMARY:Architecture & Design Film Series
DESCRIPTION:“M.C. Escher: Journey to Infinity” Launches Architecture + Design Free Monthly Film Series at 118 Elliot’s Ongoing Collaboration with American Institute of Architects Vermont and Burlington City Arts Features Simultaneous Showings and Virtual Day-Of Option \n14 September 2022\, Brattleboro Vermont:  The Architecture + Design Film Series will kick-off its 10th season of free\, monthly films shown in person simultaneously at 6:30 pm at 118 Elliot in Brattleboro\, 118 Elliot Street\, and at Burlington City Arts’ Contois Auditorium up north\, on September 21\, 2022 with “M.C. Escher: Journey to Infinity” (2019\, Robin Lutz\, 81 minutes\, Netherlands\, mostly English with some subtitles). Doors open at 6:15 pm. Film showings are free and open to all (masking is optional but appreciated) and are also available for virtual viewing all day through the A+D Film website at: www.adfilmseries.org. \nThe film\, equal parts history\, psychology\, and psychedelia\, is the story of world famous Dutch graphic artist M.C Escher (1898-1972). Director Robin Lutz’s portrait gives us the man through his own words and images: diary musings\, excerpts from lectures\, correspondence and more are voiced by British actor Stephen Fry\, while Escher’s woodcuts\, lithographs\, and other print works appear in both original and playfully altered form. “The public sees the film through the eyes of Escher himself: The camera is Escher\,” Lutz writes.  \n“The film’s plot lines interlock like the labyrinth of an Escher print. And driving it all are those Escher words\, filled with longing\, growing dark (as someone wrote of Bach) with an excess of light\,” Penn\, of Penn & Teller\, wrote in a review. \nThe Architecture + Design Film Series website  https://adfilmseries.org/films/ offers the history of the film series and descriptions and trailers for all eight movies this season. Here’s the lineup so mark your calendars for these Wednesday showings: October 19 – OLMSTED AND AMERICA’S URBAN PARKS; November 16 – THE LAST ARTISANS OF VENICE; December 14 – FREY I: THE ARCHITECTURAL ENVOY;  January 18 – FREY II: THE ARCHITECTURAL INTERPRETER;  February 15 – DAVID HOCKNEY AT THE ROYAL ACADEMY OF ARTS;  March 15 – LOUIS SULLIVAN: THE STRUGGLE FOR AMERICAN ARCHITECTURE;   April 19 – MAU: DESIGN THE TIME OF YOUR LIFE. \nThe films will be introduced by Brattleboro-based architect Jim Williams\, AIA Vermont Chapter board member and architect for 118 Elliot’s 2015 renovation\, who said: “When we decided to expand the film series beyond Burlington four years ago\, we chose 118 Elliot because the wonderful transformation of that dilapidated laundromat into a thriving gallery and community gathering space is a vibrant demonstration of the power of good design to effect positive change.”  \n118 Elliot Director John Loggia said: “We are pleased to present these thoughtfully curated films for free and open to all\, underwritten by 118 and local sponsors as a service to the community to foster understanding and stimulate conversation about the impact of design and beauty in our daily lives.”   \n“M.C. Doors open 6:15 pm\, masking is optional but appreciated. Film is also available for virtual viewing all that same day through the A+D Film website at www.adfilmseries.org.

SUMMARY:Creative Relations (Group Show)
DESCRIPTION:The Epigenetics of Creativity\nA group show exploring how relationships influence art…\n \nincluding Schuyler Gould * Phyllis Odyssey * Tina Olsen * Liza King * Markie Sallick * Toto Feldman * Aron Namenwirth * Jason Alden * John Loggia * Julia Zanes * Finn Campman \n‘In Her Mind’s Eye’ film by John Loggia shown on continuous video loop. \nShow runs June 3 to June 25\, 2022\nOpening Reception June 3\, 2022 5-9pm\nwith open music improv after 7pm \nOpen Artists Conversation: Thurs June 23\, 5pm\n \nGallery hours Fri / Sat 4 to 7pm or by appointment\nCall or email: 917-860-5640 118Elliot@gmail.com \n \n118 Elliot invites the community to join a conceptual painting and mixed media show entitled Creative Relations: The Epigenetics of Creativity. Creative Relations is a group show of Brattleboro artists who have invited family members\, also artists\, to hang work alongside their own. The premise of the show explores how family genetics\, relationships and the social and cultural history of the artist informs their work. \nThursday\, June 23 at 5pm these artists will share their views on the influences of relationships in their own work within a panel discussion entitled The Epigenetics of Creativity. We invite the public to think along with these artists about the intergenerational context that their artwork is embedded within. What’s the impact of DNA\, family ties\, environmental factors\, nature/nurture? What evokes the creative urge? How does creativity relate to personal and ancestral trauma. How do certain traits or experiences get ‘passed down’? Is creativity one of them? \n______________________________________________ \nMarkie Sallick\, a painter\, grew up watching her mother\, Lucy Sallick\, create art. She remembers when her mother shared the slogan: “Do Your Own Thing” during the Feminist Movement in NYC. Markie was inspired by seeing her mother make her mark in the world. Markie’s images of bodies are juxtaposed with her mother’s portraits. \nJohn Loggia\, one of the painters\, is including a film his mother made\, with a sound track of music he composed. The film is called “In her own Eyes” which she filmed traveling throughout the world\, in particular China in the 50’s (including images of public group Tai Chi practice) \nFor Phyllis Odessey\, making art is healing. Creativity is a joyful and redemptive transmuting experience. She reported that her father\, a very successful electrical engineer\, when he took up painting found such joy in it that he set aside a room where he and all his children would paint. That is where Phyllis and her sister began their artistic careers. \nSky Gould grew up surrounded by antiques\, which found their way into his light sculptures. He shared: Our lives are metaphors for how we see ourselves in the world. Our agency is our ability to act in the world. For example everything that an individual creates is a function of our agency – personal meaning in the world. An artist translates their sense of agency to share with others. \nTina Olsen\, a painter\, is including work created by her two daughters and grandchildren. She comes from a farming Mennonite background that stretches several generations before her birth. For her the Mennonite concept of being in the world and not of the world is part of what makes her an artist\, helping her bypass the “what do the neighbors think” mentality and find her own path. This sense of personal freedom extended to her daughters being encouraged and comfortable expressing themselves in their own way.
