DESCRIPTION:Patricia Perez Valdes\, KSC-AIPR Global Fellow will speak on “Honoring the Victims of the Pinochet Years at Chile’s Museum of Memory and Human Rights.” She will address this topic drawing from her years of experience in the Education and Audience Department of the Museum of Memory and Human Rights\, located in Santiago\, Chile. Her talk will focus on the legacy of Chile’s military dictatorship from 1973-1990\, the importance of memorialization in the construction of memory as a society\, and the challenges faced by the museum since it was inaugurated in January of 2010. \n\nPatricia Perez Valdes has been invited for an entire semester of sharing with the college community In a joint initiative by the Holocaust and Genocide Studies Academic Program at Keene State College (KSC) and the Auschwitz Institute For Peace and Reconciliation (AIPR).

DESCRIPTION:A Brattleboro Literary Festival Special Event \nLaundry\, as a metaphor for the personal narrative writing that women do\, is all about the dirt. It’s about coming clean and putting it out in public. Bringing the personal and intimate into a public space is a transgressive and powerful act. At the same time\, because the subject of personal narrative or confessional writing is lived experience and emotional travail\, it is often derided as feminine\, self-absorbed\, and weak.  This event is about reclaiming and owning a kind of writing that is sometimes dismissed or denigrated. It embraces the notion that confessional writing is women’s writing. It’s about the lives of women and the way that women write about their lives. By putting their experience into words and then out into the world\, women transform their lives in powerful ways and empower other women to do the same. \nLaundry will feature mostly local women writers of diverse backgrounds and experience reading brief\, sometimes raw\, personal or confessional pieces in various formats–spoken word\, poetry\, and creative nonfiction. Readers—Meg Baronian\, Shanta Lee Gander\, Diana Whitney\, Wendy Levy\, Verandah Porche\, Taite Blaise\, Ruth Antoinette Rodriguez and others will present work at this event.

Short stories are precise with their delivery\, they must capture the attention of the reader quickly\, and tell a full tale from beginning to end in a short time. Join us again for an evening of short-story readings with six of the festival’s most entertaining readers and writers. \nOur 2018 Short Story Readings authors are Joan Silber\, Sigrid Nunez\, Dariel Suarez\, Noy Holland and Ben Marcus. \nCash bar\, Beer\, wine\, sparkling water  \n\nNoy Holland’s latest work is I Was Trying to Describe What It Feels Like: New and Selected Stories\, out now from Counterpoint Press. Other collections of short fiction and novellas include Swim for the Little One First (FC2)\, What Begins with Bird (FC2)\, and The Spectacle of the Body (Knopf).  She has taught for many years in the MFA Program for Poets and Writers at the University of Massachusetts and serves on the board of directors at Fiction Collective Two. \nBen Marcus is the author of six books of fiction including The Flame Alphabet\, Leaving the Sea\, and his new book\, Notes from the Fog. His stories\, essays\, and reviews have appeared in Harper’s\, The New Yorker\, Granta\, Tin House\, The Paris Review\, The Believer\, and elsewhere. \nSigrid Nunez has published seven novels\, including A Feather on the Breath of God\, The Last of Her Kind\, Salvation City\, and\, most recently\, The Friend. Her work has appeared in several anthologies\, including four Pushcart Prize volumes and four volumes of Asian American literature. She lives in New York City. \nJoan Silber is the author of eight books of fiction. The most recent\, Improvement\, is the winner of the 2018 PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction and the National Book Critics Circle Award for Fiction. She received the PEN/Malamud Award for Excellence in the Short Story and her short fiction has been chosen for the O. Henry Prize\, Pushcart Prize\, and Best American Short Stories. She lives in New York and teaches at Sarah Lawrence College. \nDariel Suarez was born and raised in Havana\, Cuba. He immigrated to the United States with his family in 1997\, during the island’s economic crisis known as The Special Period. Dariel’s story collection\, A Kind of Solitude\, was selected as the winner of the 2017 Spokane Short Fiction Prize and is forthcoming from Willow Springs Books in fall of 2018. \nTim Weed’s short fiction collection\, A Field Guide to Murder & Fly Fishing (2017)\, was shortlisted for the International Book Awards\, the New Rivers Press Many Voices Project\, the Autumn House Press Fiction Prize\, and the Lewis-Clark Press Discovery Award. Tim teaches writing at Grub Street in Boston and in the MFA Writing program at Western Connecticut State University\, and he is the co-founder of the Cuba Writers Program.

DESCRIPTION:Join 2018 Festival authors Stefan Merrill Block\, Kate Greathead\, and Noy Holland\, along with special guests Michael Preston and Matthew Dicks for improvisational storytelling based on Synapsis\, a new storytelling prompt and game from Storymatic Studios (Brian Mooney and Vaune Trachtman)\n \nHere’s how it works: The storytellers will draw cards from the Synapsis box. The cards prompt them to write one sentence. Then they answer questions about the story that sentence comes from— and as they improvise their answers\, they begin to discover the story\, setting\, and characters. Audience participation welcome!\n \nA Little Box of Yes is kind of like if you crossed “Selected Shorts” with “Wait\, Wait… Don’t Tell Me” and The Moth.\n \nCash bar.\n\n\n\n\nMichael Preston lived for many years in New York and was a member of the Shaliko Company\, founded by Leonardo Shapiro. He also worked with such artists as John Sayles\, Richard Elovich\, David Cale\, Wynn Handman and Theodora Skipitares. From 1991 until 2000 he toured the world as one of the Flying Karamazov Brothers\, which included three different runs on Broadway. With them he collaborated on and performed 9 different shows\, ranging from the post-modern tragedy Le Petomane\, to an update of Room Service (winner of an L.A. critic’s award in 1998). They were nominated for an Olivier award in London for best Comedy in 1994. He directed their latest show\, Life: A Guide for the Perplexed. Preston is currently an Associate Professor of Theater and Dance at Trinity College. \nMatthew Dicks is the internationally bestselling author of the novels Memoirs of an Imaginary Friend\, Something Missing\, Unexpectedly\, Milo\, The Perfect Comeback of Caroline Jacobs\, and his new\, non-fiction book Storyworthy: Engage\, Teach\, Persuade\, and Change Your Life Through the Power of Storytelling. His novels have been translated into more than 25 languages worldwide. Matthew is a 35-time Moth StorySLAM champion and 5-time GrandSLAM champion whose stories have been featured on their nationally syndicated Moth Radio Hour and their weekly podcast. He has also told stories for The American Life\, TED\, The Colin McEnroe Show\, The Story Collider\, The Liar Show\, Literary Death Match\, The Mouth\, and many others. He is a regular guest on several Slate podcasts\, including The Gist\, where he is teaching storytelling. \n\nStefan Merrill Block grew up in Plano\, Texas. His first book\, The Story of Forgetting\, was an international bestseller and the winner of Best First Fiction at the Rome International Festival of Literature\, The Ovid Prize from the Romanian Writer’s Union\, the 2008 Merck Serono Literature Prize and the 2009 Fiction Award from The Writers’ League of Texas. Following the publication of his second novel\, The Storm at the Door\, Stefan was awarded The University of Texas Dobie-Paisano Fellowship. Stefan’s novels have been translated into ten languages\, and his stories and essays have appeared in The New York Times\, The New Yorker Page-Turner\, The Guardian\, NPR’s Radiolab\, GRANTA\, The Los Angeles Times\, and many other publications. His essays about the creative process were presented by Leonard Nimoy for United States Artists at the Chicago Museum of Contemporary Art\, Paramount Studios\, and Jazz at Lincoln Center. Although he’s never won a Moth Slam like Kate and Matthew have\, he has presented at The Moth and was once part of a Moth Mainstage show about baseball. He is the creator of The Storymatic family of creative prompts\, which includes Rememory and Synapsis. \nVaune Trachtman is a photographer and printmaker. Her work will be on display at the Editions/Artists’ Book Fair in NYC\, October 25-28 at The Tunnel in Chelsea. When she’s not working on making beautiful photopolymer gravures and Chine-collé\, she helps make things happen at Storymatic Studios.

By melding both festival performances and community-wide discussions\, Sandglass seeks to underscore the powerful importance of the arts’ role in addressing and inspiring personal engagement with national and international issues from a community level. SUMMARY:Onyxed Goat \, New Work of Justin A. Kenney & Laura Jane Walker
DESCRIPTION:The Onyxed Goat is a multi-media showing of new work by Laura Jane Walker and Justin A. Kenney. Partners in life and Art\, Walker and Kenney have collaborated on this exhibition which showcases the artists at the heights of their respective technical and creative lives in the studio. Shellack\, nails\, rusted metals\, pine board\, are some of the materials used in these large collaged assemblages which also involve carving and burning to create depth and sheen. These works live on the cusp of abstraction. Kenny\, a sculptor by trade\, creates architectural forms\, with an urban sensibility. Walker by contrast\, creates anthropomorphically\, enlisting the i-ching for inspiration\, allowing her forms to spread out before her\, until there is a clear sense of presence which can be formally honed and defined through the various techniques in her employ. Together\, this body of work illuminates the inspirational dynamic of a team sharing space\, an evolving ideology and a passion for making. This show will be up until November 1.

Elhadji Mamadou Ba\, also known as “Pape” Ba\, is a master drummer and dancer from Senegal\, West Africa. The drum class is from 6:00 to 7:00 pm and the cost is $10. The dance class will happen from 7:00 to 8:30 pm\, both at 118 Elliot in Brattleboro\, Vt. The cost is on a sliding scale of $12 – 15. Derrik Jordan\, Lisa Newell and friends will accompany on drums. It’s a new year and a great time to learn something new\, move your body\, get exposed to a different and wonderful culture and have fun! All levels are welcome. Wear clothes that you can move in and bring a water bottle.
