There will be a public reception beginning at 5:30 followed by a talk with the artist at 7:30. The show will also preview on Friday November 2 from 5:30 pm to 8:00 pm during the Vermont Jazz Center Emerging Artist Festival. The show will remain up through November 29th\, 2018. Gallery hours are Saturdays from 2 to 6 pm or by appointment. \nDetailed line drawings on old and recently salvaged paper mark a departure from the political and socially conscious images Namenwirth rendered through a technical process of digital pixelation. This current work delves into a highly personal art\, where each element is touched\, edges felt rather than masked and taped. \nThe inspiration for the work comes from closely watching trees as they grow\, observing the landscape\, their exterior bark and inner bark\, finally inside to the growth rings. These observations are translated through a process of abstraction\, drawing freehand in ink. “As the tree grows so do my drawings\, everything that happens in the process becomes part of the finished work – the moment is accepted as artifact\,” said Namenwirth.   \nNamenwirth has exhibited at The Bronx Museum\, Momenta\, VertexList and Galapagos in New York and his “Video and Animations” have been screened at Diva in Miami. He also ran an art moving company that made the moving the art. The truck painted as a conceptual message board while using it as a gallery and performance space during art happenings in Soho and Chelsea. \nThis is Namenwirth’s first solo exhibition since 2008 at VertexList when he decided to step back from the socially oriented work he had been producing and began to study music and started a project growing trees from seed. His stories\, essays\, and reviews have appeared in Harper’s\, The New Yorker\, Granta\, Tin House\, The Paris Review\, The Believer\, and elsewhere. \nSigrid Nunez has published seven novels\, including A Feather on the Breath of God\, The Last of Her Kind\, Salvation City\, and\, most recently\, The Friend. Then they answer questions about the story that sentence comes from— and as they improvise their answers\, they begin to discover the story\, setting\, and characters. Audience participation welcome!\n \nA Little Box of Yes is kind of like if you crossed “Selected Shorts” with “Wait\, Wait… Don’t Tell Me” and The Moth.\n \nCash bar.\n\n\n\n\nMichael Preston lived for many years in New York and was a member of the Shaliko Company\, founded by Leonardo Shapiro. He also worked with such artists as John Sayles\, Richard Elovich\, David Cale\, Wynn Handman and Theodora Skipitares. From 1991 until 2000 he toured the world as one of the Flying Karamazov Brothers\, which included three different runs on Broadway. With them he collaborated on and performed 9 different shows\, ranging from the post-modern tragedy Le Petomane\, to an update of Room Service (winner of an L.A. critic’s award in 1998). They were nominated for an Olivier award in London for best Comedy in 1994. He directed their latest show\, Life: A Guide for the Perplexed. Preston is currently an Associate Professor of Theater and Dance at Trinity College. \nMatthew Dicks is the internationally bestselling author of the novels Memoirs of an Imaginary Friend\, Something Missing\, Unexpectedly\, Milo\, The Perfect Comeback of Caroline Jacobs\, and his new\, non-fiction book Storyworthy: Engage\, Teach\, Persuade\, and Change Your Life Through the Power of Storytelling. Kenney & Laura Jane Walker DESCRIPTION:The Onyxed Goat is a multi-media showing of new work by Laura Jane Walker and Justin A. Kenney. Partners in life and Art\, Walker and Kenney have collaborated on this exhibition which showcases the artists at the heights of their respective technical and creative lives in the studio. Shellack\, nails\, rusted metals\, pine board\, are some of the materials used in these large collaged assemblages which also involve carving and burning to create depth and sheen. These works live on the cusp of abstraction. Kenny\, a sculptor by trade\, creates architectural forms\, with an urban sensibility. Walker by contrast\, creates anthropomorphically\, enlisting the i-ching for inspiration\, allowing her forms to spread out before her\, until there is a clear sense of presence which can be formally honed and defined through the various techniques in her employ. Together\, this body of work illuminates the inspirational dynamic of a team sharing space\, an evolving ideology and a passion for making. This show will be up until November 1.
