SUMMARY:"A Night of Surrealist Games" with Roger C. Miller
DESCRIPTION:7pm to 9:30pm\, Thurs.\, Nov.15\, 2018.  $10.00 tickets: \nSales via Eventbrite Tickets: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/a-night-of-surrealist-games-hosted-by-roger-c-miller-tickets-50582297012 \nAt the door via cash\, check or credit card. \n\nLearn and play the riotous mind-bending games that were developed by Andre Breton and his co-conspirators during the 1920’s and ’30’s\, the heyday of surrealism. Games include the Exquisite Corpse drawing game (advanced drawing skills not required!)\, the Dream Game (a board game where you end up creating a dream!)\, and many varieties of surrealist word games. The consummate master of ceremonies\, Miller will not only explain and lead the games to kick off the event\, but he’ll also DJ – providing a surrealistic soundtrack to the evening. (Paper and drawing/writing tools will be supplied). \nSays Miller\, “A great virtue is that these games are not at all competitive. A person who is an experienced artist may interact with a more naive drawer to produce a brilliant composition. It’s a thrill for me to see people\, many who never met before they sat down together to play\, collectively create something brand new.”  \n\n” ‘A Night of Surrealist Games’ was a first for us and an overwhelming patron favorite.  His knowledge of Surrealism and skill in getting strangers to play together was a smashing success!”    I.C.A. Boston \n“A hilarious\, creative\, and healthy mix of mind-bend\, head-clearing and humor-refraction.” 3S Artspace\, Portsmouth\, NH. \n\n\nSurrealist Games Link: https://rogerclarkmiller.com/surrealist-games-night/ \nRoger C. Miller is the guitarist for Mission of Burma and the keyboardist for Alloy Orchestra. He has conducted “A Night of Surrealist Games” at Mass MoCA\, the Institute of Contemporary Art (Boston)\, Real Art Ways (Hartford\, CT.)\, 3S Artspace (Portsmouth\, N.H.\,) and many others. He has shown his Surrealist drawings in solo and group exhibitions. \nRoger Miller Link: https://rogerclarkmiller.com/about/ \nFacebook Event: https://www.facebook.com/events/709184286114836/ \n\n

Gallery hours are Saturdays from 2 to 6 pm or by appointment. \nDetailed line drawings on old and recently salvaged paper mark a departure from the political and socially conscious images Namenwirth rendered through a technical process of digital pixelation. This current work delves into a highly personal art\, where each element is touched\, edges felt rather than masked and taped. \nThe inspiration for the work comes from closely watching trees as they grow\, observing the landscape\, their exterior bark and inner bark\, finally inside to the growth rings. These observations are translated through a process of abstraction\, drawing freehand in ink. “As the tree grows so do my drawings\, everything that happens in the process becomes part of the finished work – the moment is accepted as artifact\,” said Namenwirth.   \nNamenwirth has exhibited at The Bronx Museum\, Momenta\, VertexList and Galapagos in New York and his “Video and Animations” have been screened at Diva in Miami. He also ran an art moving company that made the moving the art. The truck painted as a conceptual message board while using it as a gallery and performance space during art happenings in Soho and Chelsea. \nThis is Namenwirth’s first solo exhibition since 2008 at VertexList when he decided to step back from the socially oriented work he had been producing and began to study music and started a project growing trees from seed. It was only after planting trees all over New York and New England and becoming a regular performer on the New York experimental music scene that Aron returned to drawing. “When Aron first came to Vermont to perform\, he planted some seedlings that have now grown into healthy saplings” said John Loggia\, who curated the show in cooperation with Gallery Director Lisa Mendelsund. “His drawings are meditations on that process modulated by spontaneous variations inspired by improvised music.”   \nFor more info or to inquire about purchasing art\, email  Anamenwirth@gmail.com. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n lines-10\n \n \n \n \n \n lines-1\n \n \n \n \n \n lines-2\n \n \n \n \n \n lines-11\n \n \n \n \n \n lines-5\n \n \n \n \n \n lines-12\n \n \n \n \n \n lines-6\n \n \n \n \n \n lines-9\n \n \n \n \n \n lines-4\n \n \n \n \n \n lines-8\n \n \n \n \n \n lines-3\n \n \n \n \n \n lines-7\n \n \n \n \n \n rings-19\n \n \n \n \n \n rings-18\n \n \n \n \n \n rings-17\n \n \n \n \n \n rings-16\n \n \n \n \n \n rings-15\n \n \n \n \n \n rings-5\n \n \n \n \n \n rings-6\n \n \n \n \n \n rings-7\n \n \n \n \n \n rings-8\n \n \n \n \n \n rings-9\n \n \n \n \n \n rings-10\n \n \n \n \n \n rings-11\n \n \n \n \n \n rings-12\n \n \n \n \n \n rings-13\n \n \n \n \n \n rings-14\n \n \n \n \n \n rings-4\n \n \n \n \n \n rings-3\n \n \n \n \n \n rings-2\n \n \n \n \n \n rings-1\n \n \n \n \n \n rings-21\n \n \n \n \n \n rings-20\n \n \n \n \n \n cube\n \n \n \n \n \n tree log

SUMMARY:Laundry
DESCRIPTION:A Brattleboro Literary Festival Special Event \nLaundry\, as a metaphor for the personal narrative writing that women do\, is all about the dirt. It’s about coming clean and putting it out in public. Bringing the personal and intimate into a public space is a transgressive and powerful act. At the same time\, because the subject of personal narrative or confessional writing is lived experience and emotional travail\, it is often derided as feminine\, self-absorbed\, and weak.  This event is about reclaiming and owning a kind of writing that is sometimes dismissed or denigrated. It embraces the notion that confessional writing is women’s writing. It’s about the lives of women and the way that women write about their lives. By putting their experience into words and then out into the world\, women transform their lives in powerful ways and empower other women to do the same. \nLaundry will feature mostly local women writers of diverse backgrounds and experience reading brief\, sometimes raw\, personal or confessional pieces in various formats–spoken word\, poetry\, and creative nonfiction. Readers—Meg Baronian\, Shanta Lee Gander\, Diana Whitney\, Wendy Levy\, Verandah Porche\, Taite Blaise\, Ruth Antoinette Rodriguez and others will present work at this event.

SUMMARY:Brattleboro Literary Festival: A Little Box of Yes
DESCRIPTION:Join 2018 Festival authors Stefan Merrill Block\, Kate Greathead\, and Noy Holland\, along with special guests Michael Preston and Matthew Dicks for improvisational storytelling based on Synapsis\, a new storytelling prompt and game from Storymatic Studios (Brian Mooney and Vaune Trachtman)\n \nHere’s how it works: The storytellers will draw cards from the Synapsis box. The cards prompt them to write one sentence. Then they answer questions about the story that sentence comes from— and as they improvise their answers\, they begin to discover the story\, setting\, and characters. Audience participation welcome!\n \nA Little Box of Yes is kind of like if you crossed “Selected Shorts” with “Wait\, Wait… Don’t Tell Me” and The Moth.\n \nCash bar.\n\n\n\n\nMichael Preston lived for many years in New York and was a member of the Shaliko Company\, founded by Leonardo Shapiro.
