SUMMARY:Touché! A Tournament of Words
DESCRIPTION:A night of mischief\, joymaking\, and word games to celebrate the launch of Mount Island\, the new magazine for rural LGBTQ+ and POC writers and artists!\n\nDoors open at 6:30 PM for mingling and a variety of word games until 7:00 PM\, when the main event begins: Touché! A Tournament of Words.\n\nTouché is a tournament-style game show pitting emerging writers and intrepid laypeople against unique takes on word games and writing exercises.\n\nContestants compete in five kooky and thought-provoking rounds for the love and mercy of the judges panel and a tyrannical audience.\nTickets are $5 online to guarantee seating\, or $5-10 suggested donation at the door. No one will be turned away for lack of funds.\n \nClick here to purchase tickets. \n\n\nBrattleboro’s newest small publisher\, Mount Island\, is throwing a launch party on Saturday\, October 19\, and it will be no ordinary literary soirée\, but instead “Touché!” a tournament-style game show.  The evening will be filled with several rounds of fun and friendly literary battle.  The doors open at 7 p.m.\, with a $5-$10 suggested donation at the door. No one will be turned away for lack of funds! Touché is a Brattleboro Literary Fest affiliated event. \n\n\n\nThis new literary magazine challenges popular (mis)perceptions of rural communities by supporting the visibility and creative aspirations of rural LGBTQ+ and POC writers and artists.  A recent report from the National Black Justice Coalition\, the Movement Advancement Project\, the Equality Federation\, and the National Center for Lesbian Rights confirms the national need for that visibility and inclusion\, stating that\, “..an estimated 2.9-3.8 million LGBTQ/SGL people live in rural America\, accounting for roughly 15-20 percent of the national LGBTQ/SGL population.”  Many of these individuals are queer folks of color while one fifth of all rural Americans\, that is approximately 10.3 million individuals\, are people of color. In a landscape that is often filled with assumptions about what rural life is life and who dwells within the landscape\, Mount Island is setting out to break down the walls of perception locally and nationally. \n\n\n\nThe evening will include judges Francis Cannon\, GennaRose Nethercott\, and Donald Mutebi who will be joined by four contestants who will engage in a playful battle of words until the last round. Desmond Peeples\, creator and editor of Mount Island adds\, “I wanted to celebrate our contributors and invite the community into our work through play\, in a way that could welcome folks who might not otherwise go to a ‘literary’ event. So we created this Frankenstein’s monster of a game show\, stitching classic word games and writing exercises together and lacing the rounds through with poetry and prose from our new issue.” \n\n\n\nAdditionally\, individuals will be able to purchase limited edition poetry broadsides and donate to Mount Island’s fundraising efforts.  The first digital issue of Mount Island will be available October 31. Excerpts from the upcoming issue\, including an excerpt of the poem to be published as broadsides\, “Selections from Inferior Normal” by Tyler Orion\, can be read for free at mountisland.com. \n\n\n\nJoin Mount Island on Satuday October 19\, 7-9PM at 118 Elliot to celebrate the new magazine and play “Touché! A Tournament of Words.” \n\n\n\nMount Island is a literary magazine and small press dedicated to creating space for rural LGBTQ+ and POC voices to be heard on their own terms and find solidarity in community. Mount Island is a magazine by us\, of us\, and for anybody who wants to see rural America for all it really is. Learn more at mountisland.com.

SUMMARY:Exploring Racial Sobriety\, Climate Change\, and Our Better Angels through Interplay
DESCRIPTION:Exploring Racial Sobriety\, Climate Change\, and Our Better Angels through InterPlay \nFour Wednesdays in October: Oct 9\, 16\, 30—7:00-9:00 PM \nIt’s too easy to burn out when dealing with life and death issues. Using the creative parts of ourselves along with the rational\, thinking parts has helped many of us to experience the opposite of burnout — body wisdom\, joy\, hope and new energy that come with playing with each other and the issues. \nRacial Healing: is a hunger that started in childhoodand is about to explode because we as a nation are FINALLY beginning to look at ourselves.\nClimate Change: World on a Hot Tin Roof….\nBetter Angels: Telling our stories can help us find our sweeter selves \nWe will play with all these themes for 4 weeks of Wednesdays. Please join us if you have little or tons of experience with moving\, talking\, babbling\, toning — Our bodies have more wisdom that we may realize. \nJudith Reichsman has been an InterPlay leader for 25 years. She has Masters degrees in Dance and Theology. \nFour Wednesdays in October: Oct 9\, 16\, 30—7:00-9:00 PM\n118 Elliot St\, Brattleboro\, VT

SUMMARY:"Strength of the Storm" Screening & Discussion
DESCRIPTION:As part of Climate Strike Week\, the Windham Organizing Committee of Vermont Workers Center and Extinction Rebellion Southern Vermont are hosting a screening and discussion of the film Strength of the Storm (2013\, directed by Rob Koier\, USA\, 43 min). \nThis film shows Vermonters who were directly impacted by climate change during the flooding from Tropical Storm Irene\, as they realized that we’re all in this together\, and organized after the destruction of much of their mobile home community. The film will be followed by a discussion. \n“Strength of the Storm” is an extremely powerful film that highlights the devastating impact that global climate change has had on the lives of Vermonters. Rob Koier’s documentary helps us all see and feel how the impact of our addiction to fossil fuels challenges life as we know it in an intimate and compelling manner. Let’s hope this important work inspires meaningful change.” – Jeffrey Hollender\, Author\, Activist\, and Co-Founder of Seventh Generation. \nFree and open to the public. SUMMARY:The Architecture + Design Film Series: Mies On Scene
DESCRIPTION:Directed by Xavi Campreciós and Pep Martín\n\n\n2018\, Spain\, 58 minutes\n\nVIEW TRAILER\n\n\nThe Architecture + Design Film Series\, shown monthly in Brattleboro and Burlington\, returns for its seventh season in Burlington\, second in Brattleboro\, with a screening of MIES ON SCENE: BARCELONA IN TWO ACTS (2018\, Directed by Xavi Campreciós & Pep Martín\, Spain\, 58 min) on Wednesday\, September 25 at 6:30 pm at 118 Elliot in downtown Brattleboro. \n\n\n\nAll film showings are free and open to all. \n\n\n\nThe Barcelona Pavilion\, designed by Mies van der Rohe and Lily Reich\, has been an emblem of modernist architecture for almost a century.  First built for the 1929 International Exposition and demolished immediately thereafter\, the Pavilion’s cultural impact was such that in 1986 the building was reconstructed permanently.  Mies On Scene tells the story of this building that changed the history of architecture in a reflection on the art\, space\, and the idea of “a masterpiece.” \n\n\n\nThe Pavilion is “a scenario of endless perspectives\, lights and reflections\, a living building that changes at every hour of the day and at any season of the year\,” say directors Xavi Campreciós and Pep Martín.  “Each time you record it\, the Pavilion surprises you with a new reflection or a new visual composition\, and you discover that fourth dimension that Mies created with the game of materials and perspectives.” \n\n\n\nThe Architecture + Design Film Series\, started six years ago in Burlington\, selects diverse films celebrating design in all its various forms.  Their success in Burlington led local architect Jim Williams\, who designed the popular 118 Elliot\, to extend the series’ reach to the opposite end of the state in Brattleboro with support from the American Institute of Architects Vermont Chapter (AIAVT) and numerous local business and individual sponsors.  Now the monthly screenings are held simultaneously in Burlington and in Brattleboro at 118 Elliot through April 2020. Film showings are free and open to all\, presented to foster understanding and stimulate conversation about the impact of design and beauty in our daily lives. The Architecture + Design Film Series website www.adfilmseries.org tells the history of the film series and presents film trailers for movies in this upcoming season. 118 Elliot is a modern\, fully accessible arts and educational center in downtown Brattleboro. SUMMARY:Solutions: Where Do We Go From Here? A Community Conversation
DESCRIPTION:The Commons is hosting this community conversation moderated by the investigative reporting team MacLean (Mac) and Shanta Lee Gander. \nThis conversation is an opportunity to invite everyone throughout the community to discuss some of the ways they are addressing some of the various topics that The Commons has covered in previous Special Focus sections especially the most recent piece\, Flying Signs. \nThis is not about individuals from a seat of power or position helping individuals who aren’t in those positions of power. Instead\, this is focused on asking the question what role do we all play as individuals who live and work in Brattleboro? How can we all see ourselves as a part of the solution and what does that look like for our community? Please join us as we explore what’s possible.

SUMMARY:"Within the Eye of the Storm" with Jerusalem Peacebuilders
DESCRIPTION:WWAC\, together with 118 Elliot\, will host Jerusalem Peacebuilders who will offer a screening of\n“Within the Eye of the Storm”\nFollowed by group discussions with the participants in the Jerusalem Peacebuilders’ Vermont Leadership Institute \nPlease join us for a special program focusing on the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict.  Jerusalem Peacebuilders will present the powerful Israeli film\, “Within the Eye of the Storm\,” followed by small group discussions led by pairs of Israelis and Palestinians from the Jerusalem Peacebuilders’ Vermont Leadership Institute.  This is a rare opportunity to meet Israeli and Palestinian peacebuilders and to learn more about one of the most challenging conflicts of our time.  Doors will open at 5:30 pm\, with the film beginning at 6pm and discussion following afterward.  Refreshments will be served. \n“Within the Eye of the Storm” is the story of Bassam and Rami\, a Palestinian and an Israeli who were once dedicated fighters willing to kill and be killed by one another for their nations. When faced with the tragic loss of their daughters in the conflict\, they chose to do the unexpected\, and\, instead of seeking revenge\, they turned from enemies into brothers. \nJerusalem Peacebuilders’ Vermont Leadership Institute brings together American\, Israeli\, and Palestinian young adults with the focus of creating a new generation of peacebuilders and leaders. The program challenges participants to consider different perspectives around the Israeil-Palestinian conflict. In addition\, it encourages participants to deepen their understanding of faith traditions and develop strategies for taking action to promote peace.

SUMMARY:"COBRA" Taught by Anna Patton
DESCRIPTION:A participatory\, improvisatory musical game-piece created by John Zorn. For instrumentalists and vocalists who are willing to make stuff up\, listen\, and pay attention. \nCobra is a fun\, fast-paced musical(-ish) game-piece by John Zorn. It’s structure might remind you more of a theater improv game than a piece of music. The musical/sonic material is entirely improvised and different in every iteration of the game. Participants signal a prompter to give the ensemble various cues written on cards so that all the improvisers can momentarily take control of the shape of the piece. Transitions can be quite fast and comically abrupt. Cobra is a great structure for working on decisiveness and commitment in improvisation\, and for exploring urges that may be inappropriate in politely democratic jam sessions. \nParticipants may come to whichever date or dates they can make\, though there will probably be less teaching of the game at later dates and they may need to watch and listen for a while before jumping in. \nThere is no fee\, but there will be a donation jar for anyone moved to contribute for the teaching and the use of the space. \nQuestions? anna@annapatton.com

SUMMARY:Youth Demand Action on Climate Change
DESCRIPTION:Youth Demand Action on Climate Change \nA World Environment Day Event \nSponsored by the Windham World Affairs Council \nDuring their lifetimes\, young people aged 12-21 have experienced five of the hottest years ever recorded. Facing the extremes of climate change has resulted in rising acts of activism across the country. 12-year-old Haven Coleman confronted a Colorado Congressman at a town hall over his denial of the climate change problem. Alexandria Villasenor (13) has sat in front of the UN building in New York City every Friday since December 2018. In Minneapolis\, Isra Hirsi (16) began working with iMatter and Minnesota Can’t Wait\, two climate advocacy organizations. This youth activism and others have become known in the Twittersphere as part of the wider youth-based climate movement called #FridaysforFuture. Inspired by Greta Thunberg\, a 15-year-old (now 16) who sat every Friday on the steps of the Swedish parliament to protest the government’s inaction on climate change\, youth movements have been mushrooming around the world. \nTo understand the impact and interest of youth in our neighborhoods\, backyards\, and school grounds in the areas around Brattleboro\, the Windham World Affairs Council invites youth activists who have been making their own waves in their communities\, schools\, and legislatures in the spirit of climate justice and activism. \nWe will hear from these young people\, be inspired by their activism and ideas\, and then work together to design recommendations and plans to support these youth in their activism. The event\, which will begin with local youth leaders discussing their work and end with small group engagements and discussions\, will be facilitated by Julie Snorek and Lissa Weinmann. \nDr. Julie Snorek is a Research Associate in the Environmental Studies Department of Dartmouth College. As a social ecologist\, Julie Snorek has been developing an intricate understanding of social\, ecological\, and political transitions in the Sahel and Sahara where she has lived and worked for  over twelve years with rural\, nomadic and semi-nomadic societies. Throughout her research\, Snorek strives to engage in a co-production of knowledge and to support and enhance practices of sustainability. She received her Ph.D from the Autonomous University of Barcelona in 2016 and her M.S. from SIT Graduate Institute in 2010.

SUMMARY:Daisy Turner & Community Storytelling with the Vermont Folklife Center
DESCRIPTION:The Brattleboro Words Project \nRoundtable Discussion Series \nThursday\, May 23\, 6:00 to 7:00pm at 118 Elliot \nThe Brattleboro Words Project’s monthly Roundtable Discussion series presents Vermont Folklife Center (VFC) Associate Director and Archivist\, Andy Kolovos\, at 6:00 pm at 118 Elliot\, 118 Elliot Street\, Brattleboro. Kolovos will discuss place-based audio storytelling and VFC founder Jane Beck’s work with Vermont storyteller\, Daisy Turner—the daughter of the formerly enslaved Alec and Sally Turner who settled in Grafton\, Vermont in the years following the Civil War. All Brattleboro Words Project Roundtable Discussions are free and refreshments are served. \nFor over 35 years Vermont Folklife Center staff members have traveled the state documenting the lives and experiences of Vermonters from all walks of life.  Over this time VFC has built an archive containing over 6\,000 recordings\, and has incorporated these voices into exhibits\, websites\, print publications\, radio documentaries and\, most recently\, their podcast\, VT Untapped™. \n“The Vermont Folklife Center has been instrumental in shaping our approach to community-based learning\,” said Brattleboro Area Middle School teacher Joe Rivers\, who creates student-produced podcasts and radio for the Brattleboro Historical Society and helps spread this pedagogy to other area schools through his leadership in the Brattleboro Words Project. “[VFC’s] student-friendly ethnographic techniques\, and ability to engage learners with appropriate technology\, have made our efforts to chronicle Brattleboro’s past more robust and accessible.” \nThe Brattleboro Words Project has been donating audio equipment and trainings to area schools and helping community members participate in place-based research and creative audio production on sites important in the history of words in and around Brattleboro\, with a focus on indigenous and other underrepresented stories. Collaboration with VFC will help Brattleboro Words Project teachers and community researchers better approach the stories behind the places on the Brattleboro Words Trail\, the  initial interation of which will be available to the public by the end of 2020. “As folklorists and ethnomusicologists we ground our work in ethnographic inquiry\,” says Kolovos. “We seek to understand experience from the perspective of the people to whom an experience belongs\, and audio interviews lie at the heart of what we do.” \nThe Brattleboro Words Project is a multi-year collaboration between the Brattleboro Historical Society\, the Brattleboro Literary Festival\, Write Action\, Brooks Memorial Library\, and Marlboro College backed by a National Endowment for the Humanities matching grant and support from area businesses and foundations. The Project seeks public participation in research\, writing and creating the Brattleboro Words Trail\, audio linked to sites of interest in the history of words for walking\, biking and driving tours of our area\, a book on Brattleboro’s printing and publishing history\, and other events linked to the October Brattleboro Literary Festival and throughout the year.
