SUMMARY:The Architecture + Design Film Series: RAMS
DESCRIPTION:The Architecture + Design Film Series\, shown monthly in Brattleboro and Burlington\, returns for its seventh season in Burlington\, second in Brattleboro\, with a screening of Rams (2018\, Directed by Gary Hustwit\, USA\, 74 min) on Wednesday\, November 13 at 6:30 pm at 118 Elliot in downtown Brattleboro. \nAll film showings are free and open to all. \nRams is a portrait of Dieter Rams\, one of the most influential designers alive\, and a rumination on consumerism\, materialism\, sustainability\, and the future of design. His design principles champion simplicity\, honesty\, and restraint\, and still apply to design theory and practice today. Hustwit’s film takes after Rams’ aesthetic of “less\, but better\,” “by being brisk\, matter of fact\, well lighted and composed of clean lines\,” writes Glenn Kenny in a review for the New York Times. \nDieter Rams’ “less\, but better” approach to industrial design has earned him international acclaim since the 1970s; students of design around the world are familiar with his 10 principles for good design. His work with German companies Braun and Vitsœ has been credited as a major influence on such modern design innovations as Apple Inc.’s products. Ironically\, Rams is also one of the earliest opponents of “planned obsolescence\,” a controversial product design policy companies such as Apple Inc. often employ. \nGary Hustwit is an independent filmmaker and photographer based in New York. He has produced 13 feature documentaries\, including the award-winning I Am Trying To Break Your Heart about the band Wilco; Oddsac\, an experimental feature film by the band Animal Collective; and Mavis!\, the HBO documentary about gospel/soul music legend Mavis Staples. \nThe Architecture + Design Film Series\, started six years ago in Burlington\, selects diverse films celebrating design in all its various forms.  Their success in Burlington led local architect Jim Williams\, who designed the popular 118 Elliot\, to extend the series’ reach to the opposite end of the state in Brattleboro with support from the American Institute of Architects Vermont Chapter (AIAVT) and numerous local business and individual sponsors.  Now the monthly screenings are held simultaneously in Burlington and in Brattleboro at 118 Elliot through April 2020. Film showings are free and open to all\, presented to foster understanding and stimulate conversation about the impact of design and beauty in our daily lives. \nThe Architecture + Design Film Series website www.adfilmseries.org tells the history of the film series and presents film trailers for movies in this upcoming season. 118 Elliot is a modern\, fully accessible arts and educational center in downtown Brattleboro. SUMMARY:NEC Annual Meeting & ACCIDENTS CAN HAPPEN: The Women of Three Mile Island
DESCRIPTION:48th ANNUAL MEETING \nBring a friend! The public is encouraged to attend. \n  SATURDAY\, OCTOBER 26 @ 1:30 pm\n1:30 Refreshments − 2:00 Members Meeting − 3:00 Break − 3:15 Dr. Hutner − 4:15 Wrap-up \n \nDr. Heidi Hutner\nStony Brook University \nACCIDENTS CAN HAPPEN: The Women of Three Mile Island \nWe are honored to be joined by Stony Brook University professor\, Heidi Hutner\, filmmaker\, writer\, producer. Former Chair of Sustainability Studies and former Associate Dean in the School of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences at SBU\, Hutner is a scholar of gender and nuclear history. She films\, writes\, and teaches about ecofeminism\, race\, nuclearity\, and the environment. \nAt this October 26th event\, Heidi Hutner will screen a short from her documentary feature\, Accidents Can Happen: The Women of Three Mile Island. The documentary tells the story of the women from Three Mile Island. This is the tale of four mothers– Linda\, Joyce\, Beth and Paula—ordinary American housewives who lived five miles from the nuclear power plant at the time of the meltdown. The accident turned their lives upside down and awakened them to the politics of the nuclear industry and the silencing of truth. The mothers fought back and organized\, forming\, “Concerned Mothers and Women\,” an antinuclear advocacy group. \nA woman-led movement was galvanized on a larger scale as well by Three Mile Island meltdown\, as the documentary will show\, including the likes of Dr. Helen Caldicott\, Jane Fonda\, Bonnie Raitt\, Winona LaDuke\, and German Greens co-founder\, Petra Kelly\, and Aileen Mioko Smith (Japan)\, among many others. \nThree Mile Island story is also located within a larger framework\, as nuclear weapons and power are rooted in systemic patriarchy. \nThroughout nuclear history\, women’s voices have been silenced. Women have been excluded from participation in nuclear policy-making; women and girls are most harmed by radiation exposures; socio-economically\, women and children suffer most in nuclear disasters; and women who speak up and seek the truth are called “hysterical” or “radiophobic.” \nDespite it all–women play a vital role in peace and antinuclear advocacy\, as Accidents Can Happen shows. These heroic female stories must be told. \nFILM INFO:        https://www.accidentscanhappenthefilm.com/      Womenofthreemileisland@gmail.com \nMEETING INFO: www.NewEnglandCoalition.org   necnp@necnp.org 802-380-4462

SUMMARY:BCTV Volunteer Appreciation Dinner & Producer Awards Party
DESCRIPTION:BCTV’s annual producer awards ceremony will be held on Thursday\, October 24th at 6:00 p.m. at 118 Elliot. The public is invited. The People’s Choice Award winner\, which is a popular vote among the year’s top-viewed videos\, will also be announced that night. \nThe following organizations and individuals will be recognized for their achievements during the past fiscal year: \nCommunity Partner Award – WTSA Radio \nStarting in January 2019\, WTSA Radio\, one of the few remaining locally owned media outlets\, began uploading ‘Morning News with Ian Kelley’ to YouTube\, which is then rebroadcast by BCTV on channel 8 at Noon and 6 PM weekdays. Ian is joined on the show by fellow news anchor Tim Johnson\, along with a variety of guests including athletes and artists. WTSA’s partnership with BCTV benefits both organizations and especially the local community. \n Find WTSA News episodes here \nNonprofit Member Award – Brattleboro Area Prevention Coalition\, Greater Falls Connections\, Turning Point of Windham County\, West River Valley Thrives. \nThis award typically recognizes the work of a single nonprofit member\, but this year we salute a cluster of nonprofits working together on the issue of Substance Use. These organizations used BCTV to achieve their missions by producing videos or recording events that reflect the community’s interest in addiction prevention and response. We celebrate the particular efforts of the following producers: \n\n\nBrattleboro Area Prevention Coalition & Greater Falls Connections – Rolf Parker\, Scott Sharland\, Reggie Martell\, Chad Simmons\, Molly Nash \n\n\nTurning Point of Windham County – Don Cuerdon\, Cecil McLaury \n\n\nWest River Valley Thrives – Nick Plante\, Reggie Martell \n\n\nBCTV community producer – Maria Dominguez \n\n\nFind videos here: https://www.brattleborotv.org/substance-use \nhttps://www.brattleborotv.org/turning-point-windham-county \nhttps://www.brattleborotv.org/brattleboro-area-prevention-coalition-presents \nMunicipal Partner Award – Kathy Hege & Rick Hege\, Town of Townshend \nKathy and Rick Hege have supported BCTV’s coverage of public meetings in Townshend for many years – Kathy\, as a long time Selectboard chair\, and Rick\, as the webmaster of unofficialtownshendvt.net. Their high level of cooperation and assistance helps BCTV staff record municipal meetings for those that can’t attend\, which promotes transparency in town government. It is gratifying for BCTV to be valued by municipal leaders who dedicate their time and energy to public service. \nNew Producer of the Year: Dan Long \nDan learned how to produce a show that incorporates screen-capturing and multi-camera editing for ‘Gematria Today’\, in which Dan explains the ancient Caballistic practice of Gematria\, coding numbers into letters to find hidden meaning in words. Dan’s series is a good example of an instructional multimedia video. \nhttps://www.brattleborotv.org/gematria-today \nProducer of the Year: Alex Evans \nAlex Evans interned with BCTV in 2017 as credit for his Landmark College ‘Civic Engagement’ class. For his internship\, Alex\, who was the station manager for Landmark’s student radio station\, chose to create a mini-documentary about BCTV. Alex came back last fall with a College-sanctioned internship of 90 hours. While he helped with editing and directing\, he also produced his weekly radio show\, ‘Talking Nerdy\,’ for TV and YouTube\, and it was a huge hit. Alex has since graduated and now lives in Portland\, Maine\, but not before he made his mark on BCTV and our viewers! \nMini-documentary: https://www.brattleborotv.org/bctv-highlights/all-about-bctv-2017-mini-doc \nSample episode: https://www.brattleborotv.org/talking-nerdy/ep-10-nerd-flies \nSeries of the Year: Meg Mott’s ‘Debating Our Rights’ & ‘Good Clash: The Art of Productive Disagreement’ \n‘Debating Our Rights’ and ‘Good Clash: The Art of Productive Disagreement’ are two popular discussion series presented by (retired) Marlboro College professor Meg Mott\, produced by Janis Chaillou and Em Richards of For The Record Video. Meg Mott leads discussions with active participation by audience members to identify shared values and encourage healthy debate.  Janis Chaillou and Em Richards worked with Mott to record both series in light of the high level of interest in her discussions. \nhttps://www.brattleborotv.org/debating-our-rights \nhttps://www.brattleborotv.org/good-clash-art-productive-disagreement \nSponsor of the Year: Karen Ameden of D&K’s Jamaica Grocery \nAs a sponsor of BCTV’s Town Meeting coverage for years\, Karen Ameden\, owner of D&K’s Jamaica Grocery\, has been one of the few small businesses to support BCTV. When BCTV approached the select boards in our service territory for financial support in light of a decline in federal funding for public access television\, Jamaica required 35 signatures in order for residents to vote on the issue at Town Meeting Day. Karen volunteered to make the petition available at her store so that local residents could sign – and they did. When we send a producer up Route 30 to cover meetings\, this kind of local support is our reward! \nBCTV’s 50+ local producers were nationally recognized in 2019 and together with staff produced more than 1300 hours of local programming over the past year. \nThe BCTV awards ceremony is fashioned after the Emmys\, but a Halloween themed dress is suggested this year due to the timing of the event. Audience members will enjoy dinner by The Marina\, and the chance to mingle with creative types and community volunteers. A $5 donation is suggested. \nBrattleboro Community Television is a community media center serving Brattleboro\, Dummerston\, Guilford\, Jamaica\, Newfane\, Putney\, Townshend\, and Vernon. BCTV’s mission is to promote civic engagement and transparency and to empower community members to share their knowledge\, views\, and creativity\, without prejudice.  To learn more about BCTV\, visit brattleborotv.org or call 802-257-0888.

SUMMARY:Touché! A Tournament of Words
DESCRIPTION:A night of mischief\, joymaking\, and word games to celebrate the launch of Mount Island\, the new magazine for rural LGBTQ+ and POC writers and artists!\n\nDoors open at 6:30 PM for mingling and a variety of word games until 7:00 PM\, when the main event begins: Touché! A Tournament of Words.\n\nTouché is a tournament-style game show pitting emerging writers and intrepid laypeople against unique takes on word games and writing exercises.\n\nContestants compete in five kooky and thought-provoking rounds for the love and mercy of the judges panel and a tyrannical audience.\nTickets are $5 online to guarantee seating\, or $5-10 suggested donation at the door. No one will be turned away for lack of funds.\n \nClick here to purchase tickets. \n\n\nBrattleboro’s newest small publisher\, Mount Island\, is throwing a launch party on Saturday\, October 19\, and it will be no ordinary literary soirée\, but instead “Touché!” a tournament-style game show.  The evening will be filled with several rounds of fun and friendly literary battle.  The doors open at 7 p.m.\, with a $5-$10 suggested donation at the door. No one will be turned away for lack of funds! Touché is a Brattleboro Literary Fest affiliated event. \n\n\n\nThis new literary magazine challenges popular (mis)perceptions of rural communities by supporting the visibility and creative aspirations of rural LGBTQ+ and POC writers and artists.  A recent report from the National Black Justice Coalition\, the Movement Advancement Project\, the Equality Federation\, and the National Center for Lesbian Rights confirms the national need for that visibility and inclusion\, stating that\, “..an estimated 2.9-3.8 million LGBTQ/SGL people live in rural America\, accounting for roughly 15-20 percent of the national LGBTQ/SGL population.”  Many of these individuals are queer folks of color while one fifth of all rural Americans\, that is approximately 10.3 million individuals\, are people of color. In a landscape that is often filled with assumptions about what rural life is life and who dwells within the landscape\, Mount Island is setting out to break down the walls of perception locally and nationally. \n\n\n\nThe evening will include judges Francis Cannon\, GennaRose Nethercott\, and Donald Mutebi who will be joined by four contestants who will engage in a playful battle of words until the last round. Desmond Peeples\, creator and editor of Mount Island adds\, “I wanted to celebrate our contributors and invite the community into our work through play\, in a way that could welcome folks who might not otherwise go to a ‘literary’ event. So we created this Frankenstein’s monster of a game show\, stitching classic word games and writing exercises together and lacing the rounds through with poetry and prose from our new issue.” \n\n\n\nAdditionally\, individuals will be able to purchase limited edition poetry broadsides and donate to Mount Island’s fundraising efforts.  The first digital issue of Mount Island will be available October 31. Excerpts from the upcoming issue\, including an excerpt of the poem to be published as broadsides\, “Selections from Inferior Normal” by Tyler Orion\, can be read for free at mountisland.com. \n\n\n\nJoin Mount Island on Satuday October 19\, 7-9PM at 118 Elliot to celebrate the new magazine and play “Touché! A Tournament of Words.” \n\n\n\nMount Island is a literary magazine and small press dedicated to creating space for rural LGBTQ+ and POC voices to be heard on their own terms and find solidarity in community. Mount Island is a magazine by us\, of us\, and for anybody who wants to see rural America for all it really is. Learn more at mountisland.com.

SUMMARY:Exploring Racial Sobriety\, Climate Change\, and Our Better Angels through Interplay
DESCRIPTION:Exploring Racial Sobriety\, Climate Change\, and Our Better Angels through InterPlay \nFour Wednesdays in October: Oct 9\, 16\, 30—7:00-9:00 PM \nIt’s too easy to burn out when dealing with life and death issues. Using the creative parts of ourselves along with the rational\, thinking parts has helped many of us to experience the opposite of burnout — body wisdom\, joy\, hope and new energy that come with playing with each other and the issues. \nRacial Healing: is a hunger that started in childhoodand is about to explode because we as a nation are FINALLY beginning to look at ourselves.\nClimate Change: World on a Hot Tin Roof….\nBetter Angels: Telling our stories can help us find our sweeter selves \nWe will play with all these themes for 4 weeks of Wednesdays. Please join us if you have little or tons of experience with moving\, talking\, babbling\, toning — Our bodies have more wisdom that we may realize. \nJudith Reichsman has been an InterPlay leader for 25 years. She has Masters degrees in Dance and Theology. \nFour Wednesdays in October: Oct 9\, 16\, 30—7:00-9:00 PM\n118 Elliot St\, Brattleboro\, VT

SUMMARY:"Strength of the Storm" Screening & Discussion
DESCRIPTION:As part of Climate Strike Week\, the Windham Organizing Committee of Vermont Workers Center and Extinction Rebellion Southern Vermont are hosting a screening and discussion of the film Strength of the Storm (2013\, directed by Rob Koier\, USA\, 43 min). \nThis film shows Vermonters who were directly impacted by climate change during the flooding from Tropical Storm Irene\, as they realized that we’re all in this together\, and organized after the destruction of much of their mobile home community. The film will be followed by a discussion. \n“Strength of the Storm” is an extremely powerful film that highlights the devastating impact that global climate change has had on the lives of Vermonters. Rob Koier’s documentary helps us all see and feel how the impact of our addiction to fossil fuels challenges life as we know it in an intimate and compelling manner. Let’s hope this important work inspires meaningful change.” – Jeffrey Hollender\, Author\, Activist\, and Co-Founder of Seventh Generation. \nFree and open to the public. SUMMARY:The Architecture + Design Film Series: Mies On Scene
DESCRIPTION:Directed by Xavi Campreciós and Pep Martín\n\n\n2018\, Spain\, 58 minutes\n\nVIEW TRAILER\n\n\nThe Architecture + Design Film Series\, shown monthly in Brattleboro and Burlington\, returns for its seventh season in Burlington\, second in Brattleboro\, with a screening of MIES ON SCENE: BARCELONA IN TWO ACTS (2018\, Directed by Xavi Campreciós & Pep Martín\, Spain\, 58 min) on Wednesday\, September 25 at 6:30 pm at 118 Elliot in downtown Brattleboro. \n\n\n\nAll film showings are free and open to all. \n\n\n\nThe Barcelona Pavilion\, designed by Mies van der Rohe and Lily Reich\, has been an emblem of modernist architecture for almost a century.  First built for the 1929 International Exposition and demolished immediately thereafter\, the Pavilion’s cultural impact was such that in 1986 the building was reconstructed permanently.  Mies On Scene tells the story of this building that changed the history of architecture in a reflection on the art\, space\, and the idea of “a masterpiece.” \n\n\n\nThe Pavilion is “a scenario of endless perspectives\, lights and reflections\, a living building that changes at every hour of the day and at any season of the year\,” say directors Xavi Campreciós and Pep Martín.  “Each time you record it\, the Pavilion surprises you with a new reflection or a new visual composition\, and you discover that fourth dimension that Mies created with the game of materials and perspectives.” \n\n\n\nThe Architecture + Design Film Series\, started six years ago in Burlington\, selects diverse films celebrating design in all its various forms. The Architecture + Design Film Series website www.adfilmseries.org tells the history of the film series and presents film trailers for movies in this upcoming season. 118 Elliot is a modern\, fully accessible arts and educational center in downtown Brattleboro. SUMMARY:Solutions: Where Do We Go From Here? A Community Conversation
DESCRIPTION:The Commons is hosting this community conversation moderated by the investigative reporting team MacLean (Mac) and Shanta Lee Gander. \nThis conversation is an opportunity to invite everyone throughout the community to discuss some of the ways they are addressing some of the various topics that The Commons has covered in previous Special Focus sections especially the most recent piece\, Flying Signs. \nThis is not about individuals from a seat of power or position helping individuals who aren’t in those positions of power. Instead\, this is focused on asking the question what role do we all play as individuals who live and work in Brattleboro? How can we all see ourselves as a part of the solution and what does that look like for our community? Please join us as we explore what’s possible.

SUMMARY:"Within the Eye of the Storm" with Jerusalem Peacebuilders
DESCRIPTION:WWAC\, together with 118 Elliot\, will host Jerusalem Peacebuilders who will offer a screening of\n“Within the Eye of the Storm”\nFollowed by group discussions with the participants in the Jerusalem Peacebuilders’ Vermont Leadership Institute \nPlease join us for a special program focusing on the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict.  Jerusalem Peacebuilders will present the powerful Israeli film\, “Within the Eye of the Storm\,” followed by small group discussions led by pairs of Israelis and Palestinians from the Jerusalem Peacebuilders’ Vermont Leadership Institute.  This is a rare opportunity to meet Israeli and Palestinian peacebuilders and to learn more about one of the most challenging conflicts of our time.  Doors will open at 5:30 pm\, with the film beginning at 6pm and discussion following afterward.  Refreshments will be served. \n“Within the Eye of the Storm” is the story of Bassam and Rami\, a Palestinian and an Israeli who were once dedicated fighters willing to kill and be killed by one another for their nations. When faced with the tragic loss of their daughters in the conflict\, they chose to do the unexpected\, and\, instead of seeking revenge\, they turned from enemies into brothers. \nJerusalem Peacebuilders’ Vermont Leadership Institute brings together American\, Israeli\, and Palestinian young adults with the focus of creating a new generation of peacebuilders and leaders. The program challenges participants to consider different perspectives around the Israeil-Palestinian conflict. In addition\, it encourages participants to deepen their understanding of faith traditions and develop strategies for taking action to promote peace.
