This lecture uses Japan as a case study to more broadly consider the notion of sustainability within structures of global governance. The talk will situate the implications of this discourse within unfolding events in the country\, such as the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. Leni’s work deals with how a specific conception of sustainability is folded into spectacular mega-events like the Olympics and what the implications are for people and places over which the concept is imposed. Her talk will shed light on the challenges posed by dominant sustainability-based discourses as they are faced by Ainu activists and communities. \nLeni Charbonneau is a senior at Marlboro College\, graduating with a Plan of Concentration in Human Geography and Asian Studies. During her time at Marlboro\, Leni has been active in the World Studies Program\, through which she traveled to conduct research and field work in Northern Japan. Since 2018\, she has been a researcher at the Centre for Environmental and Minority Policy Studies based in Sapporo\, Japan. With this Centre\, she has worked closely with activists and organizations representative of Japan’s Ainu community- the Indigenous peoples of the country’s northernmost island. The documentary tells the story of the women from Three Mile Island. This is the tale of four mothers– Linda\, Joyce\, Beth and Paula—ordinary American housewives who lived five miles from the nuclear power plant at the time of the meltdown. The accident turned their lives upside down and awakened them to the politics of the nuclear industry and the silencing of truth. Dan will\nintroduce guest speakers Michael Goldberg\, retired DBVI (Vermont’s Division for\nthe Blind and Visually Impaired) Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor; and Brattleboro\nTown Manager\, Peter Elwell. Following the guest speakers\, there will be instruction\nin being a sighted guide\, as well as a walk along Main Street with optional\nblindfold. Those who would like to try walking under blindfold will be guided.\nLight refreshments will be available. \n\n\n\nFifty-five years ago\,White Cane Safety Day was\nauthorized by President Lyndon B. Johnson as advocated by the National\nFederation of the Blind. The Presidential proclamation said\, in part\, that the\nannual reminder would make “people more fully aware of the meaning of the white\ncane and of the need for motorists to exercise special care for the blind\npersons who carry it.” \n\n\n\n The White Cane Awareness Day Walk is free and open to the public.
