The classes will take place at 118 Elliot Street in Brattleboro\, VT.  The drum class is from 6:00 to 7:00 pm and the cost is on a sliding scale of $12-15.  The dance class is from 7:15 to 8:45 pm and the cost is on a sliding scale of $15-20. All levels\, including beginners are very welcome. \n\n\n\nSabar is a traditional Senegalese drum typically played with one stick and one hand. In this film\, artist Jill Magid creates a daring proposition that becomes a fascinating artwork in itself\, an act of negotiation that explores how far an artist will go to democratize access to art.\n\n\n\n\nThe Architecture + Design Film Series\, shown monthly in Brattleboro and Burlington\, continues with a screening of THE PROPOSAL (2018\, Directed by Jill Magid\, USA\, 86 min)\, the shocking story of one artist’s attempt to democratize the privately-held archives of Mexico’s most famous architect\, Luis Barragán\, on Wednesday\, January 22 at 6:30 pm at 118 Elliot in downtown Brattleboro. All film showings are free and open to all. \n\n\n\nCalled “the artist among architects\,” Luis Barragán is Mexico’s most famous architect\, known for bold shapes and colors such as Mexico City’s Torres de Satélite\, designed in collaboration with Mathias Goeritz. Upon his death in 1986\, Barragán’s treasured archives fell under the control of a Swiss woman\, Federica Zanco\, who allows only limited public access to them at her foundation in Basel. The Proposal details Jill Magid’s dogged attempt to mount an exhibition of Barragán’s works\, following Magid’s correspondence with Zanco and her final culminating effort\, a stunt which one news outlet called “a ghoulish plot.”  \n\n\n\nThe Architecture + Design Film Series\, started six years ago in Burlington\, selects diverse films celebrating design in all its various forms.  Their success in Burlington led local architect Jim Williams\, who designed the popular 118 Elliot\, to extend the series’ reach to the opposite end of the state in Brattleboro with support from the American Institute of Architects Vermont Chapter (AIAVT) and numerous local business and individual sponsors.  Now the monthly screenings are held simultaneously in Burlington and in Brattleboro at 118 Elliot through April 2020. Set amongst the backdrop of Richard Brown’s stunning photographic exhibit\, The Last of the Hill Farms: Echoes of Vermont’s Past\, Brattleboro Farm Stories will explore the connections between Vermont’s vital farming past and its living\, breathing present. \nThe “seeds” for Brattleboro Farm Stories were planted at opening reception for The Last of the Hill Farms exhibit at the 118 Elliot’s gallery in November. As local farmer Howie Prussack lingered amongst Brown’s photos\, he and his friends talked about the world the images depicted—sharing stories about the farmers they remembered and reflecting on their own lives in agriculture. Inspired by the vivid reminiscences of Prussack and his fellow farmers\, VFC Trustees Leslie Turpin and Andy Davis and Associate Director\, Andy Kolovos began to explore the creation of a public\, local conversation—a dialogue between people and photographs—like the discussions shared between friends on that evening. \nOn the afternoon of January 19\, 2020 local farmers will gather at 118 Elliot to spin stories of their own farming life\, inspired by the presence of Brown’s images on display. Jay Bailey (Brattleboro)\, Ashlyn Bristle (West Brattleboro)\, Al Franklin (Guilford)\, Dan MacArthur (Marlboro)\, Helen Robb (West Brattleboro) and others will kick off the story-telling. The class spent the majority of September and October in the woods studying carbon sequestration\, reading Thoreau and other great naturalists\, and through observation\, stewardship\, and writing\, deepening their connection to the Earth. \nMoving from the forest to downtown late in October\, students began a study of place and how a sense of place defines much of our identity. As Wendell Berry wrote: “If you don’t know where you are\, you don’t know who you are.” A place is as much a community of shared values as it is a physical environment and the class set out to discover how their community is responding to the threat and reality of climate change. The Society Project is the centerpiece of this exploration. For the project\, students selected\, interviewed and photographed a member of the wider Brattleboro community and created a digital montage. The interview and resulting montage focused on how the individual in both their work and life addresses climate change. \nCommunity members from many walks of life were involved in this project. Other projects include duos with Andrew VanNorstrand and with Julie Vallimont\, the Julian Gerstin Sextet\, and the cello-oud-percussion-clarinet quartet Dunham Shoe Factory. \nAnna teaches vocal and instrumental ensemble classes\, music theory\, and aural skills at workshops all over the US an in her home town of Brattleboro\, VT. In 2006\, Anna started the Soubrette Jazz Choir at the Vermont Jazz Center which performs her creative arrangements of historical and contemporary American music. \nIn 2015\, Anna completed her Masters of Music in New England Conservatory’s Contemporary Improvisation program. The Centro Botín\, the focus of this month’s A+D Film Series screening\, is Renzo Piano’s gift to the northern Spanish city of Santander\, a building intended to reinvigorate the city the way nearby Bilbao was revived by its Guggenheim Museum two decades earlier. Nevertheless\, the Centro has attracted ardent local critics who accuse Piano of aggrandizing the wealth of the Botín family\, a powerful banking dynasty\, and of flouting city ordinances. This lecture uses Japan as a case study to more broadly consider the notion of sustainability within structures of global governance. The talk will situate the implications of this discourse within unfolding events in the country\, such as the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. Leni’s work deals with how a specific conception of sustainability is folded into spectacular mega-events like the Olympics and what the implications are for people and places over which the concept is imposed. Her talk will shed light on the challenges posed by dominant sustainability-based discourses as they are faced by Ainu activists and communities. \nLeni Charbonneau is a senior at Marlboro College\, graduating with a Plan of Concentration in Human Geography and Asian Studies. During her time at Marlboro\, Leni has been active in the World Studies Program\, through which she traveled to conduct research and field work in Northern Japan. Since 2018\, she has been a researcher at the Centre for Environmental and Minority Policy Studies based in Sapporo\, Japan. With this Centre\, she has worked closely with activists and organizations representative of Japan’s Ainu community- the Indigenous peoples of the country’s northernmost island. Through this work\, Leni has also worked with transnational Indigenous coalitions\, most often assisting with initiatives rooted in Arctic and northern environments. His design principles champion simplicity\, honesty\, and restraint\, and still apply to design theory and practice today. Hustwit’s film takes after Rams’ aesthetic of “less\, but better\,” “by being brisk\, matter of fact\, well lighted and composed of clean lines\,” writes Glenn Kenny in a review for the New York Times. \nDieter Rams’ “less\, but better” approach to industrial design has earned him international acclaim since the 1970s; students of design around the world are familiar with his 10 principles for good design. His work with German companies Braun and Vitsœ has been credited as a major influence on such modern design innovations as Apple Inc.’s products. Former Chair of Sustainability Studies and former Associate Dean in the School of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences at SBU\, Hutner is a scholar of gender and nuclear history. She films\, writes\, and teaches about ecofeminism\, race\, nuclearity\, and the environment. \nAt this October 26th event\, Heidi Hutner will screen a short from her documentary feature\, Accidents Can Happen: The Women of Three Mile Island. The documentary tells the story of the women from Three Mile Island. This is the tale of four mothers– Linda\, Joyce\, Beth and Paula—ordinary American housewives who lived five miles from the nuclear power plant at the time of the meltdown. The accident turned their lives upside down and awakened them to the politics of the nuclear industry and the silencing of truth. The mothers fought back and organized\, forming\, “Concerned Mothers and Women\,” an antinuclear advocacy group. \nA woman-led movement was galvanized on a larger scale as well by Three Mile Island meltdown\, as the documentary will show\, including the likes of Dr. Helen Caldicott\, Jane Fonda\, Bonnie Raitt\, Winona LaDuke\, and German Greens co-founder\, Petra Kelly\, and Aileen Mioko Smith (Japan)\, among many others. \nThree Mile Island story is also located within a larger framework\, as nuclear weapons and power are rooted in systemic patriarchy. \nThroughout nuclear history\, women’s voices have been silenced. Women have been excluded from participation in nuclear policy-making; women and girls are most harmed by radiation exposures; socio-economically\, women and children suffer most in nuclear disasters; and women who speak up and seek the truth are called “hysterical” or “radiophobic.” \nDespite it all–women play a vital role in peace and antinuclear advocacy\, as Accidents Can Happen shows. For his internship\, Alex\, who was the station manager for Landmark’s student radio station\, chose to create a mini-documentary about BCTV. Alex came back last fall with a College-sanctioned internship of 90 hours. While he helped with editing and directing\, he also produced his weekly radio show\, ‘Talking Nerdy\,’ for TV and YouTube\, and it was a huge hit.
