Olsen lives locally and grew up in Springfield\, MA. She traveled widely and eventually moved to New York where she taught art at the Walden School and worked therapeutically with the arts at the South Beach Psychiatric Center on Staten Island for many years. Tina found a creative community at the River Gallery School and began to work in oils after moving to Brattleboro to live near her daughter. “I paint the wildness of things\,” Olson said. “the land and people and what lives freely beneath the surface of things. When I paint I feel like my real self. I don’t like to know what it is at first glance. I just want it to look alive – as if it just happened.” \n  \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Roxcell Bartholomew \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Roxcell Bartholomew is a self-taught artist living and working in Brattleboro. He grew up in the Caribbean and moved to the United States in his teens. Roxcell rediscovered his interest in painting while in the military. He says: “I realized that creating has always been a tool for acknowledging and processing the indescribable elements of my experience. Whenever I am creating\, there is no choice but to be present within the space called me. I simply try my best to breathe life into the surreal colorscapes\, geometric shapes and human forms that arise within my stream of consciousness.”  \n  \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Jillian Farwell \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Jillian Farwell has spent most of her life in West Dummerston where her family has lived for more than 100 years. She says: “I was born into a philosophical\, very verbal intellectual heritage\, but I was always more comfortable in the natural world. I found meaning through art making. It is the process of clarifying as you work – a whole-body way of knowing. I began with clay\, which brought me into my body\, and now I work in oil paint. I don’t know how that unfolds. I understand my life better when I paint and look at my paintings.” \n  \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Ursula von Rydingsvard\n \n \n \n \n \n \n Lauren Watrous grew up in Brattleboro and teaches studio arts at The River Gallery School and The Community College of Vermont. Lauren’s recent works are intimately scaled oils that relate person and place. \n  \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n “Together\, we are helping each other understand our own creative processes in this group show at 118\,” Farwell said.

SUMMARY:Rethinking Native\, Stranger\, and Home: The Brattleboro Words Project and a Progressive Sense of Place
DESCRIPTION:The Brattleboro Words Project Roundtable Discussion Series \nRethinking Native\, Stranger\, and Home: The Brattleboro Words Project and a Progressive Sense of Place \nwith William Edelglass \nFriday April 17\, 6:00PM. Free and open to the public. \nThe distinction between native and stranger\, often used to justify exclusion\, is grounded in a strong sense of belonging to place. This talk explores contemporary theories and practices of place as inclusive and dynamic. In these theories\, the practice of place arises through the stories that are told. Places can become inclusive through a multiplicity of stories. Drawing on these theories\, we will look at the Brattleboro Words Project as a practice of place.

SUMMARY:118 Elliot Portrait Project
DESCRIPTION:In March of 2020\, finding ourselves suddenly isolated\, a group of artists who had been planning a show at 118 Elliot started an online drawing group. We found that our drawing sessions were enhanced when we drew each other. Not only did it give us an opportunity to develop our skills of observation but we found it created a more relaxed relationship among online participants. The rhythm of our conversations became more natural and less strained as people worked quietly together. Conversations seemed to come and go in a natural easy-going way. We realized that the process of drawing and painting each other created a social connection that had been missing in other online activities. \nSince then we have created a program to encourage others to engage in online portraiture. This is an idea open to all and there are no rules. Our objective is to help people make satisfying social connections while creating art that chronicles our difficult journey through the pandemic. We hope that others will find it a way to have a satisfying personal experience as much as a creative one. \nIf you would like to join a group send an email to tinakolsen@aol.com. She will send you an invitation to a Zoom session. If you are doing portraits on your own and would like to share them on our archive\, please send images to plum@dti.net with subject bar PORTRAITS. \nThere will also be a curated show of portraits at 118 Elliot sometime in the spring.

At the Art Monastery (now in Springfield\, VT) we explore contemplative practice\, creative practice\, and communal living. With my background and passion for movement\, once we landed in Vermont\, I started developing Catalyst Training based on what I did in my own daily practice. What I’m really excited about is blending opposites to refresh and awaken the body and mind.”Catalyst is both a full on work out and an awareness building session. We go from dance music to breath work\, we jump around the room and we do yoga poses on a mat. It’s my dream 2 hours of training the body and mind to be more awake\, more free\, and honestly\, happier.”\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCockrell will offer two 4-week workshop series at 118 Elliot on Saturdays from 10:00am-12:00pm from February 29-March 21 and April 4-May 2.\n\n\n\n\n\nPreregistration is required for both series by emailing Neva at Neva@LoomEnsemble.com. \n\n“I experienced in myself and observed that Catalyst is incredibly accessible for a wide range of abilities and mobilities.” —Becky Miller\, Burlington\, Vermont\n\nOne of the beautiful things about the way this workshop is structured is that it can really meet you where you’re at. All levels of movement experience and ability are welcome. “It was a goal for me that the class could be diverse\,” Nevasays\, “when we share any space\, but especially a movement space with all different types of bodies\, each person learns more.” \n\n“Catalyst creates a container that allows me to give my body what it needs\, while also pushing me to push myself. I achieved more than I thought I could\, worked harder than I thought I wanted\, and loved it way more than I thought possible. This isn’t “exercise” or “strength training\,” it’s an expression of joy in sweat.” —Shawn\, Brooklyn\, NY\n\nCatalyst was birthed at the Art Monastery\, where Neva currently lives and is a co-director. When she was first creating Catalyst\, she taught it everyday for an entire summer to anyone who happened to be at the Art Monastery for a residency or retreat and asked for their feedback. The technique is therefore inherently steeped in similar values of bringing awareness into our everyday movements\, building community through kindness and connection\, and bringing creativity into even the smallest parts of our lives. \n\n“My experience of Catalyst Training with Neva was a full mind\, body\, spirit nourishing and full contact experience.” —Maria Pilar Pina\, Alexandria\, Virginia\n\nLearn More

SUMMARY:"Democracy: Can it be saved? (and why bother)" A Debate Between Ambassador Basora & Dr. Wilking
DESCRIPTION:“Democracy: Can it be saved? (and why bother)” A Debate Between Ambassador Adrian Basora & Dr. Andrew Wilking \nFollowing by Q&A and discussion \nFriday February 21\, 7:00 PM \nThis event is a followup of a 2017 volume entitled Does Democracy Matter? The United States and Global Democracy Support\, of which Ambassador Basora is the principal author.  This work provided the conclusions of eleven scholars from widely different backgrounds who ask whether and\, if so\, how the U.S. should support democracy beyond its own borders. The authors agree that American strategic interests are served in the long run by the spread of democracy abroad\, but they differ as to how this support meshes with other national security goals. The concluding chapter outlines a system of triage for realistically assessing where and how such assistance can be effective in promoting US security interests. \nSince the publication of this work\, both the world\, and U.S. government actions regarding democracy abroad\, have changed significantly. And so has the state of our own democracy. \nThe program will start with a debate between Dr.Wilking and Ambassador Basora\, but will leave ample time for questions and dialogue. We hope you will be able to join us for what promises to be a lively and thought-provoking evening!

SUMMARY:Vermont Vermouth Grand Opening Party
DESCRIPTION:Vermont Vermouth’s grand opening party to celebrate the release of their first products! There will be tasting tastings\, pairings\, vermouth by the glass\, and bottles to go. \nWhat is vermouth? Vermouth is fortified wine that has been infused with secret blends of herbs and spices. In the U.S.\, vermouth is classically used in cocktails\, such as the manhattan\, the martini\, and the negroni. In Europe\, vermouth is a popular apéritif on its own\, or with a splash of seltzer on the rocks as a low-alcohol cocktail.  \nVermont Vermouth was founded in 2019 by Kobey Shwayder\, a lifelong flavor enthusiast. By combining wine made from cold-tolerant grapes and local botanicals\, we look to create a unique craft vermouth with local flavor.

SUMMARY:The Architecture + Design Film Series | The Proposal
DESCRIPTION:Directed by Jill Magid (2018\, USA\, 86 mins)\n\nUpon the death of architect Luis Barragan in 1988\, much of his design work was privately purchased and concealed from the world’s view. In this film\, artist Jill Magid creates a daring proposition that becomes a fascinating artwork in itself\, an act of negotiation that explores how far an artist will go to democratize access to art.\n\n\n\n\nThe Architecture + Design Film Series\, shown monthly in Brattleboro and Burlington\, continues with a screening of THE PROPOSAL (2018\, Directed by Jill Magid\, USA\, 86 min)\, the shocking story of one artist’s attempt to democratize the privately-held archives of Mexico’s most famous architect\, Luis Barragán\, on Wednesday\, January 22 at 6:30 pm at 118 Elliot in downtown Brattleboro. All film showings are free and open to all. \n\n\n\nCalled “the artist among architects\,” Luis Barragán is Mexico’s most famous architect\, known for bold shapes and colors such as Mexico City’s Torres de Satélite\, designed in collaboration with Mathias Goeritz. Upon his death in 1986\, Barragán’s treasured archives fell under the control of a Swiss woman\, Federica Zanco\, who allows only limited public access to them at her foundation in Basel. The Proposal details Jill Magid’s dogged attempt to mount an exhibition of Barragán’s works\, following Magid’s correspondence with Zanco and her final culminating effort\, a stunt which one news outlet called “a ghoulish plot.”  \n\n\n\nThe Architecture + Design Film Series\, started six years ago in Burlington\, selects diverse films celebrating design in all its various forms.  Their success in Burlington led local architect Jim Williams\, who designed the popular 118 Elliot\, to extend the series’ reach to the opposite end of the state in Brattleboro with support from the American Institute of Architects Vermont Chapter (AIAVT) and numerous local business and individual sponsors.  Now the monthly screenings are held simultaneously in Burlington and in Brattleboro at 118 Elliot through April 2020. SUMMARY:Brattleboro Farm Stories
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, January 19\, from 3-5 pm\, the Vermont Folklife Center\, Brattleboro Words Project and 118 Elliot will present Brattleboro Farm Stories\, a FREE community storytelling event bringing together local farmers and residents to share personal reflections on our region’s agricultural heritage at 118 Elliot Street\, Brattleboro\, Vermont. Set amongst the backdrop of Richard Brown’s stunning photographic exhibit\, The Last of the Hill Farms: Echoes of Vermont’s Past\, Brattleboro Farm Stories will explore the connections between Vermont’s vital farming past and its living\, breathing present. \nThe “seeds” for Brattleboro Farm Stories were planted at opening reception for The Last of the Hill Farms exhibit at the 118 Elliot’s gallery in November. As local farmer Howie Prussack lingered amongst Brown’s photos\, he and his friends talked about the world the images depicted—sharing stories about the farmers they remembered and reflecting on their own lives in agriculture. Inspired by the vivid reminiscences of Prussack and his fellow farmers\, VFC Trustees Leslie Turpin and Andy Davis and Associate Director\, Andy Kolovos began to explore the creation of a public\, local conversation—a dialogue between people and photographs—like the discussions shared between friends on that evening. \nOn the afternoon of January 19\, 2020 local farmers will gather at 118 Elliot to spin stories of their own farming life\, inspired by the presence of Brown’s images on display. Jay Bailey (Brattleboro)\, Ashlyn Bristle (West Brattleboro)\, Al Franklin (Guilford)\, Dan MacArthur (Marlboro)\, Helen Robb (West Brattleboro) and others will kick off the story-telling. Audience members will be invited to build on the stories and images around them by adding stories of their own. Andy Davis will moderate the storytelling and share a new ballad that he wrote on the life of Romaine Tenney\, a farmer in the Ascutney area. Arthur Davis will also perform a recitation of “The Giving War” by Mac Parker. \nRichard Brown’s inspirational photograph exhibit\, Last of the Hill Farms: Echoes of Vermont’s Past will be on display at 118 Elliot through January. The lives\, landscapes\, and time period Brown so lovingly captured are available for viewing through large and small format\, finely detailed\, photographic prints\, which were hand-made by the artist. The Last of the Hill Farms is a collection of moments born from the land and the people—then crafted by Richard’s careful hand with preparation\, patience\, and a bit of serendipity. Gallery hours are most Saturday afternoons from 12 to 3 pm or by appointment. The exhibit closes the end of January.

SUMMARY:Society Project Films Premiere
DESCRIPTION:The Society Project (in a time of Climate Change)\nFriday\, January 17 at 7pm\n118 Elliot \nA screening of the community interviews created by Hilltop Montessori Middle School students for The Society Project. \nThe Hilltop Montessori Middle School has dedicated this academic year to the study of climate change and crisis. The class spent the majority of September and October in the woods studying carbon sequestration\, reading Thoreau and other great naturalists\, and through observation\, stewardship\, and writing\, deepening their connection to the Earth. \nMoving from the forest to downtown late in October\, students began a study of place and how a sense of place defines much of our identity. As Wendell Berry wrote: “If you don’t know where you are\, you don’t know who you are.” A place is as much a community of shared values as it is a physical environment and the class set out to discover how their community is responding to the threat and reality of climate change. The Society Project is the centerpiece of this exploration. For the project\, students selected\, interviewed and photographed a member of the wider Brattleboro community and created a digital montage. The interview and resulting montage focused on how the individual in both their work and life addresses climate change. \nCommunity members from many walks of life were involved in this project. There are individuals involved in the municipal life of Brattleboro\, artists\, activists\, clergy\, entrepreneurs\, a state senator\, and business owners. The resulting series of short films reveals a committed\, aware\, and involved community who care deeply about the future of Brattleboro and the world.
